Lauren Lucky's daughter admires student work at The Masks We Wear, this week's exhibition from Sara Price's Humanities classes |
Greetings Osprey Community,
We hope you will find time to attend at least one of the three student exhibitions of learning that are taking place next week. On Monday Tina Hott's Physics classes present the Rube Goldberg Exhibition, beginning at 5:00 in the AHS Commons. Students were tasked with creating complicated, imaginative and whimsical machines that perform a simple task--applying a band-aid--using their understanding of physics, teamwork and creativity. Prizes will be awarded at 6:00 for best design, best use of satire and grand champ. Come see how the Rubes do!
On Tuesday, Shane Nelson's sophomore Humanities and Ashley Carruth's junior Humanities classes are both exhibiting. Join Shane's students in the AHS Commons between 6:00 and 8:00 for The Hero's Journey, a multimedia interactive presentation that reflects what they've learned through their study of Joseph Campbell's theories about universal heroic narratives across cultures.
Ashley's juniors are hosting With Justice for All Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The exhibition will feature film, writing and artwork the students created in response to their intensive study of homelessness in Durango. Politicians and community organizers will speak at the exhibition and the evening will include a community dinner as well as collection of donations to help out our homeless community. Students are collecting blankets, warm clothing, feminine hygiene products and school supplies Monday and Tuesday at school, as well as at the event. Learn more about Ashley's Morality and Politics of Justice project and the exhibition in this Durango Herald article.

student ambassadors Cady Bright and Brigid O'Brien braving the cold to raise awareness about Colorado Gives Day!

The AHS Board of Directors meets next Wednesday evening, 5:30 to 7:30, at AHS and all are welcome.
Next week is the final week of classes, and students will transition to end-of-semester reflection via preparation for Presentations of Learning. Schedules and attendance expectations vary according to grade level; please refer to this letter, which we sent out to all students and families earlier this week, for all the details.
Many thanks to all who made donations to AHS on Colorado Gives Day this past Tuesday. We raised over $1200 for the school thanks to this online campaign and we are grateful for everyone's ongoing generosity.
Osprey parents are organizing our Staff Appreciation Luncheon, which will take place on Friday, December 22; contributing food or helping on the day of the event by decorating, setting up, serving or cleaning up is another great way to show your support for our school and its hardworking, compassionate teachers and staff. Please sign up here if you are able to donate time, food or funds.

Student Council Representatives Heleny Zacamolpa, Ethan Holst and Joe Rioux selling CandyGrams
|
Thank you to all who contributed to the Student Council Food Drive. The folks at Manna Soup Kitchen were thrilled to receive over $1000 worth of food for their pantry from Ospreys. Student Council has turned their attention to spreading some holiday-themed cheer this week and will continue to sell CandyGrams during lunch through next Wednesday for $1 apiece. We encourage everyone to send out encouragement and appreciation in this way. CandyGrams will be delivered during the school day next Friday (maybe by elves!).
We hope that you all have a restful weekend.
Thanks for all
do to help the Ospreys soar!
