NEWS FROM THE NEST
January 22, 2016
Greetings Osprey Community,

Next Wednesday, we hope to see many at you at one of two AHS events.  Students in Sara Price's Humanities classes present their Model UN Exhibition, 5:00-7:00pm at Fort Lewis College, Noble Hall rooms 125 and 130.  Assuming the roles of ambassadors from a variety of UN states, the students will attempt to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict using parliamentary procedure and their knowledge of global politics--no small feat, indeed.

9 to 5 actresses Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda: inspiration for our AHS Spellebration team
Meanwhile, over at the Henry Strater Theatre, AHS teachers Lori Fisher, Susy Raliegh and Torrey Baldwin will represent our school in the annual Snowdown Spellebration, competing against teams from other organizations and businesses in town in a spelling bee to raise money for Durango Adult Education Center.  We'd love to see a big crowd supporting the AHS team--who will, of course, be decked out in 80s costumes befitting their team name: "Working 8:30 to 3 (with summers off)."  Many thanks to local business The Payroll Department for generously sponsoring our Spellebration team.

We have confirmed and scheduled standardized tests that will be administered in 9th through 11th grade this spring; please see this letter to families for the details.

The PoWeR Career Fair that was originally scheduled for January 7 has been rescheduled for March 7.  All 9th and 10th grade students will travel to Fort Lewis College to participate.  As this is the first day of LINK internships for our juniors, we have decided to cancel the Beyond the Nest Conference for this year.

One of our Osprey families could use a little extra support right now. Sophomore Courtney Beeman's mother had a medical emergency last weekend and is in critical condition.  Courtney's friend, AHS sophomore Hannah Bissell, has started a GoFundMe page for folks to donate money to offset the Beeman family's medical expenses.  We will keep you posted as we learn of other ways to support this family.

Finally, please be aware that we have changed the date for the next Parent Advisory Committee metting; PAC will meet Tuesday, February 2 from 8:30 to 10:00am at Carvers.

As a reminder, Monday of next week is a Professional Development Day for our staff; no school for students.   Enjoy your long weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Ospreys Soaring: Ice Climber Liam Foster
by Hannah Langford

This past weekend, sophomore Liam Foster participated in the Ouray Ice Festival, where he  competed in the Elite mixed climbing competition as well as the Hari Berger speed climbing  competition. Mixed climbing is the art of using ice climbing tools to scale rock and ice. As the  youngest competitor in the history of the event, Liam competed with professional climbers from  as far as Japan, and climbed routes older than himself. Nevertheless, he placed 18th out of 33 in t he elite competition, and 19th out of 36 in speed climbing. Although he greatly enjoyed  competing, Liam highlights how much he appreciates the community and support of everyone.  Liam hopes to hear back any day now whether or not he will be able to compete next month in  Lillehammer, Norway, at the Youth Olympic Games. We look forward to seeing where Liam's  determination and skill take him next.

Osprey Week First Payment Due Next Week!
by Lyle Bryson

students in last year's Skateboarding Osprey Week
While the thrilling adventures of Osprey Week linger far off in the distance, the first fee payment deadline does not. The first 50% of the total fee for Osprey Week is due Friday, January 29.

Although families are welcome to submit the full Osprey Week fee amount at this time, at least the first 50% of the fee must be paid by this date. The easiest way to pay is to search "Online Payments" on the Animas High School website. Scroll to the bottom of his page until you find the "Osprey Week Fee" section. Fill in the required credentials, click "Add to Cart" then scroll to the bottom of the page and click "View Cart." Checkout from here is very simple, and you'll have submitted your Osprey Week fee in no time!

If you would like to make a physical payment, checks made out to Animas High School with a memo including the student's name and Osprey Week title can be given to Bridget at the front desk. Cash payments will also be accepted, but again, the organizers of Osprey Week ask that the student's name and Osprey Week title is clearly displayed on a letter/sticky note attached to the money.

The second half of the fee is not due until February 26.
