Greetings Osprey Community,

It was a short week back, with our school closures due to all this snow, but it was great to see all our Ospreys back in the nest for the first half of the week.  Unfortunately, the PoWeR Career Fair at Fort Lewis College and the Beyond the Nest Conference at AHS were both cancelled on Thursday; we will keep you posted if either is rescheduled for a later date.

On Monday, Aliza Cruz's Geometry students will travel to the New Mexico Escape Room in Albuquerque for their current project, which will ultimately have them creating their own escape room for exhibition.  If you haven't heard about them yet, escape rooms are physical adventure games where a group must solve a series of puzzles, find clues and escape the room within a set time limit.  The group will meet in the AHS lower lot at 7:45am and will return to AHS by 9:00pm.

Tuesday morning, the Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10:00 at Carver's.  That evening, the School Excellence Committee meets at AHS from 5:00 to 6:30, and the AHS Board of Directors meets Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30, also at AHS.

Also on Wednesday evening, Jessica McCallum's 11th grade Humanities students will present their exhibition, An Evening of Rhetorical Discourse, at the Animas City Theatre from 5:00 to 8:30.  Join AHS juniors as they express their emerging political and idealogical perspectives on issues important to them as young Americans.  Students have been exploring the relationship between ideology and the rhetoric we encounter as citizens in a democratic society.  They will share their original oratory, debate, music, spoken word and poetry, and audience members are encouraged to bring an open mind and be prepared to be impacted by youth voices.

Enrollment is now open for the 2016-17 school year, and we invite those entering 9th, 10th or 11th grade next fall to schedule a Shadow Day by calling (970) 247-2474 or emailing mainoffice@animashighschool.com. New students interested in attending AHS next fall should complete the  Intent to Enroll Form on the AHS website.  Sean and a handful of our student ambassadors will attend the Durango School Fair next Thursday evening at Fort Lewis College to share information about our school, and we will host multiple AHS Information Sessions for Prospective Students and Families over the next several weeks  Please help us spread the word!  If we have more students interested in attending than spots available in any grade, we will hold a lottery on March 18.  Please note that current students do not need to complete the Intent to Enroll form; we will send out a separate form to those currently enrolled in early March to hold their spots.

We hope that you all enjoy the snowy weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.  Thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Founding Teacher Colleen Dunning Joins AHS Board of Directors

We are thrilled to announce that AHS founding teacher Colleen Dunning has joined the AHS Board of Directors.  Colleen brings an invaluable perspective to the board's work, as a dedicated, passionate, enthusiastic educator who has seen our school grow and evolve over the past seven years since its founding.  Last summer, Colleen transitioned from teaching biology at AHS to working at Hood Mortuary in Durango.  She is excited to stay connected with and active in the Animas community in this new role.

We would also like to acknowledge that Danielle Sullivan has transitioned off the board.  Danielle contributed so much in her role, and we greatly appreciate her vision, leadership and collaboration.

"Noises," by Eliana Rothwell
Congratulations to Osprey senior Eliana Rothwell, who has had three of her beautiful photographs accepted into Open Shutter Gallery's current International Juried Photography Exhibition.  Two of Eliana's images received excellence awards.  The show will be on display through January 14.  Eliana studied photography for her LINK internship last year, and plans to take a gap year next year to study and work in India with her camera in tow.
