NEW YEARS HOLIDAY
The RACS fulfillment center will be closed on Monday, Jan 1st for the New Years holiday. All orders and inquires that come in over the holiday weekend will be processed when we return on Tuesday, Jan 2nd.
UPDATES
All of the December 26th releases from Discotek are going to be coming a little late. Discotek's new releases materials usually ship to retail a few weeks prior to the street dates, so this months delays are unusual, but then again, it is Christmas and the replicators tend to push small batch work to the end of the line this time of year. We are hoping to have them in stock by the first or second week of January. Who knows, maybe they will come in along with the January releases... ;-)
Discotek isn't the only one with seasonal delays. Sentai has bumped the street date for the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV (Season 4) Part 2 BLURAY up a week to Jan 9th. This one in particular is right up front on our radar because we have a TON of pre-orders for it to fill. Once they hit our dock we'll be working hard to get them turned around to you as quickly as possible.
I;m happy to report that we finally got caught up on processing trade in's earlier this week, at least the ones that arrived here before Christmas. If you have been waiting for a trade in code and still haven't seen it show up in your inbox, let us know and we'll track it down for you.
And finally, we're only gonna be running our Barrage of Bargains holiday sale for a few more days. Just a heads up, some of those materials are already starting to sell out and come out of the Salvo's, so it's time to go ahead and get what you want before these deals are gone!

Every year I always want to do this big annual recap, and every year I never have time to write it up between the two holidays. So instead, I'm going to do a quick 2023 countdown of the top 5 best selling Anime (by units shipped) here at RACS:

Of course, if we include Adult titles, nothing matches the number of copies of the Interspecies Reviewers BLURAY that we've shipped this year. It's the #1 selling single BluRay for the year, and last year, and in fact if we had access to total sales statistics from Critical Mass, might be one of the most popular single sub only north american Anime BD releases of all time. We have shipped close to 1,700 copies of IR this year, and near 6,100 copies over the past 2 years. If you add in the now OOP Steelbook, it gets closer to 7,500 total copies that we've shipped. I know it's a super echii, wacky, and (very) controversial show, but two years on it is still one of the most requested Anime releases we've ever carried.
I know, who woulda thought right? ;-)
STORE STUFF - WHAT'S NEW @ RACS THIS WEEK!!
We did get in our copies of the Kaguya-sama Love Is War The First Kiss That Never Ends (Movie) BLURAY from AniPlex on time this week, which was a Christmas miracle! ;-) All pre-orders have now shipped.
On the adult side, we got in Kitty's new release of the License to Sleaze BLURAY (Adult) which also triggered a bunch of pre-order shipments that were holding for both of their Dec releases.
Even though it's a holiday week, we still got a nice shipment of new manga and lite novels. Notable new arrivals include Ayakashi Triangle #7, Duke of Death and His Maid #10, Kaiju No. 8 #9, Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible #11, Please Go Home, Miss Akutsu! #4, This Is Screwed Up, But I Was Reincarnated as a Girl in Another World #10, the Spy X Family Family Portrait [Novel] and many more!

And finally, before we slip outta here for the holiday weekend I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that after pretty robust holiday sales we only have one unit left of the Sword Art Online Platinum Collector's Edition Novel Box Set. First one to order it gets it, and once it's gone we will be taking it off the site.

IN THE NEWS
With Netflix’s successful One Piece live-action series setting sail toward its second season, the streaming service seemingly shocked the anime world when it announced a full reboot of the anime. Netflix’s anime reboot was unveiled with a special announcement video aired during December 17th’s One Piece Super Stage Red at Shueisha’s annual Jump Festa. In the trailer, the streaming platform confirmed this new animated project intends to reimagine Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga — starting from the very beginning with the East Blue arc. Netflix also verified they intend to make The One Piece completely distinct from Toei Animation’s long-running classic. Produced by WIT Studio (Spy x Family and Suicide Squad ISEKAI), Netflix’s The One Piece is a revolutionary collaboration with representatives from Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co. — forming The One Piece Production Committee to oversee the project. In a joint statement shared by Netflix, the committee declared that their goal is to make use of ” the latest cutting-edge technology to provide viewers with a modern yet nostalgic experience of straw hat Luffy’s adventures through the East Blue saga.” A separate statement was shared on the official One Piece website, translated via DeepL, wherein Wit Studio President George Wada declared he was “proud of the series’ history and humbled to take on the task to draw a new trajectory for the series.” “We aim to get people all over the world excited by carefully portraying Mr. Eichiro Oda’s depiction of the challenges of chasing dreams, establishing friendships, and hope for the future,” Wada continued, concluding his statement by taking on the opportunity to recruit aspiring animators who are interested in being a part of this new endeavor. While Netflix has yet to confirm whether the Japanese voice actors will be reprising their roles in The One Piece, much like they did for in the dub for the live action series, it would be safe to assume that this will be the case. Based on the Jump Festa trailer, Monkey D. Luffy appears to be voiced by Mayumi Tanaka, who has served as the voice actor since the One Piece anime began in 1999, which suggests Netflix intends to cast the original voice actors for the upcoming reboot. Netflix has not provided release dates for The One Piece anime or the live-action’s second season.
After sharing this article my friend Sean wrote me to say:
"The baggage that terms like reboot/reimagining/re-whatever comes with anymore and that the "The One Piece Production Committee" didn't name Oda himself as a member makes this kinda suspect. I'd hope they learned from how well the live-action series did to stay faithful, but the entertainment industry and learning aren't two concepts that gel too often."
The folks at ClownFish have posted some thoughts this week on the upcoming AI revolution in regards to the localization of Anime and Manga, and how it might significantly reduce the need for Western translators, especially the ones who like to adapt the Japanese dialog to better fit their ideas about western audiences.
As a purist anything that leads to more authentic translations of the original Japanese source material is welcome. I hate adaptations to fit local audiences bc the whole point of Anime is to get exposure to Japanese culture and sensibilities thru the lens of Japanese story telling. That said, I'm skeptical that AI is quite ready to do translations better than humans. I mean, for all the hype I still have to load the dishwasher myself...

Kaguya-sama Love Is War The First Kiss That Never Ends (Movie) BLURAY
Shuchiin Academy’s student council room – the place where Vice President Kaguya Shinomiya and Student Council President Miyuki Shirogane met.
After a long battle in love, these two geniuses communicated their feelings and, at the Hoshin Festival, had their very first kiss. However, there was no clear confession.
