A QUICK NOTE

The Panzer this week is from Bukowski. The actual quote goes like this:

“Understand me. I’m not like an ordinary world. I have my madness, I live in another dimension and I do not have time for things that have no soul.”

I admire his writings immensely. :-)

STORE STUFF

We only have two new Anime arrivals in stock this week, but both of them are fabulous. First, we have the early arrival of the Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 1 Part 2 BLURAY/DVD from Crunchymation, and the excellent Giovanni's Island BLURAY from G-Kids.

In addition to the new stuff, we finally got restocked on the Interspecies Reviewers BLURAY (Adult) from Critical Mass which has been out of stock since the beginning of January. Backorders are shipping now.

You can find that entire list here.

We got in two big new manga shipments this week - both on the same day! Notable new arrivals include Bakemonogatari #17, This Is Screwed Up, But I Was Reincarnated as a Girl in Another World #5, My Wife Has No Emotion #4, Rent-A-Girlfriend #17, and the new series Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife #1. Too many to list, so checkout the rest here. Plus I wanted to note that we got the 1st Don't Toy With Me Miss Nagatoro Manga Box Set which contains Vol #1-6 of this most entertaining manga. AND we also posted another huge batch of upcoming manga and, of course, more date changes, which you can find here.

And finally, we just got the Assassination Classroom Manga Box Set (Vol #1-21 + Extras) back in stock from Viz after about a two year long hiatus. Originally issued in 2019, I'm pretty sure this will be the last pressing of this unique boxed set, so just FYI - get em while they last!

IN THE NEWS

Aniplex of America and Crunchyroll announced a U.S. theatrical event for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village. On March 3, 2023, Episodes 10 and 11 of the series' Entertainment District Arc will be shown in select theaters alongside an extended Episode 1 of the Swordsmith Village Arc. Back in April 2021, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train opened at around $19 million for the weekend.

Netflix recently ordered an animated series based on Pluto, according to Deadline. The series is based on the manga of the same title by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki (see "'Pluto' Manga"), which is inspired by "The Greatest Robot on Earth" story arc from Astro Boy (1964).

Netflix is the Wile E Coyote to the good Manga adaptation Road Runner...

Manga and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto, whose body of work includes Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Queen Emeraldas, and Galaxy Express 999, died on February 13 in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 85. The cause of death was given as acute heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Miyako Maki, a manga artist who is prominent in Japan and sometimes collaborated with her husband. Matsumoto is best known to English-language readers for his space opera manga and anime, with many of the anime becoming available in English long before the manga. The most influential of these is Space Battleship Yamato (released in English as Star Blazers), which he directed. The series, which ran in 1974-75, was one of the first sci-fi anime to have the deeper themes and complicated storylines that would later characterize series such as Neon Genesis Evangelion. Matsumoto received numerous awards during his life, including the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun and the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

God speed Mr. Matsumoto. We all owe you so much. Thank you.

Sunrise's announced that the Gundam Factory Yokohama facility — which houses a moving, life-size RX-78-2 Gundam statue — will remain open until March 31, 2024.The staff cited the continued widespread interest to visit the attraction, despite the lingering domestic and overseas travel restrictions due to COVID-19. The facility was originally slated to close on March 31, 2022 after a limited-time run, but it was already extended once before to March 31, 2023. The 18-meter-high (59-foot-tall) life-size, moving Gundam held its grand opening for public viewing in December 2020.

Manga was the biggest contributor to 2023 year-to-date graphic novel unit sales declines in the book channel of 13%, according to NPD BookScan. Manga is responsible for 60% of the decline, according to the report. This follows a slowing of book channel graphic novel sales growth in 2022, when graphic novel unit sales were only up 1.8% year over year, after 81% growth (in dollars, including book fairs) in 2021. Kids graphic novel sales in the book channel were down 7% in units in 2022, which helped pull the overall graphic novel growth rate down to that 1.8% number. Manga still accounts for over half of book channel sales, according to NPD BookScan data. For the 52 weeks ending February 11, 2023, manga accounted for 53% of book channel sales, with kids graphic novels a distant second at 26%, and YA graphic novels third with 6%.

Considering the ramp up in manga publishing during the pandemic, it really doesn't have anywhere to go but down for awhile. Currently we are looking at 2,200 anual releases, and I would say a 'healthy' manga market in the US can't really support more than around 1,500 issues annually, less during a resession, so we've still got a ways to go before we return to a sustainable post-pandemic manga market.

Anime streaming service Crunchyroll [i.e. Crunchymationsonystuf] laid off about 85 employees last week. According to one employee with knowledge about the recent terminations, the layoffs primarily affected the company's marketing and engineering sectors. The source did not know if the layoffs only affected full-time employees or included contractors. Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini informed staff about the layoffs in an email on February 16. The email cites the integration of the Funimation and Crunchyroll teams as the reason behind the terminations. At an "All Staff" meeting on Tuesday, Crunchyroll leadership informed employees that those who were laid off will continue to receive benefits throughout the severance period. Multiple sources cited that the decision was not a cost-saving measure but rather a matter of resolving redundant roles.

As always happens with these sorts of acquisitions, most of the original Funimation team members are now gone. I think we all know where CR is gonna look next for 'redundancy' in their recently acquired business operations...

Last month, Netflix executives told investors that reducing subscription prices were out of the question. In a January earnings call, co-Chief Executive Greg Peters hinted the company might raise prices in regions where consumers can afford the streaming service. But in the last week, first reported by Cord Cutters News and now The Wall Street Journal, the streaming giant slashed subscription prices in over 30 countries. In what appears to be a rare move, Netflix reduced prices across Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, Jordan, Yemen, and Libya; sub-Saharan African markets, including Kenya; and European countries, such as Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovenia. In Central and South America, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Venezuela have seen reductions in subscription costs. In Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines have also seen reductions. Meanwhile, US customers have seen their monthly subscription prices rise over the last few years. There was no relief for North America.
