TAB CLEARING & STORE STUFF
In another chapter in the Adventures in Anime Retailing, we had to navigate 'X's DMCA appeals process this morning because some clown car company's bot in Spain flagged our stock art image of the BluRay cover for the Ghost Cat Anzu the Movie BLURAY as a copyright violation. They represent the original rights holder of the movie art in Spain apparently, and we had to file a counter claim against their claim explaining what the BD cover art represents a product we sell and explain why it's common use. We should send a bill for time and materials to X for allowing these ridiculous bots to crawl their system and create bogus strikes. Elon certainly can afford it...
I wanted to talk a little bit about Viz's wholesale pricing schema for their limited edition home video releases. Viz's wholesale price for Anime releases has always been higher than the industry average, which is why you rarely see their new releases at more than a 10% or 15% discount off MSRP. Now, for their limited releases, Viz is charging retailers nearly 90% of the MSRP at wholesale. So if you are wondering why the street price for the Undead Unluck Complete Series BLURAY (Limited Edition) is close to MSRP, it's because Viz isn't letting anyone have any margin in the product. So we have to carry these releases as basically a pass through item at little to no margin just to make sure RACS customers have access to them on our store. I would suggest to Viz executives, if they are asking themselves why these releases aren't selling well, it's because retailers have a hard time promoting a product priced this way, and Anime fans are going to have a hard time buying a product that has to be priced unreasonably high at POS because there is no wiggle room in the price point. Allow for some margin, and we can price it lower and make it available to more fans and collectors. Just some food for thought.
This is why these big studio executives love me so much. ;-)
Not Anime related, but we are always fascinated by how other businesses package their shipments. This week we needed some CR2032 batteries for the office, and this is how Amazon shipped them to us. Obviously the computer system selected the wrong box for the item, but the thing that bakes my noodle is that the packer on the line didn't override it when they boxed it up. Things are definitely different in an Amazon fulfillment center than they are here at RACS. ;-)
And finally, I just wanted to give an update regarding the Ubel Blatt Deluxe Edition #1 Graphic Novel (Hardcover) mis-print (the first pressing is missing page #67) in that we still have not seen an official statement from Yen Press about it, but it looks like all the inventory has been pulled from distribution so I'm hoping they are working on a repress. Anyone who purchased it from RACS will automatically get a free replacement as soon as Yen Press is able to provide us with corrected copies, whenever that happens. :-)

Sentai sent us the My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered BLURAY a couple weeks early, and we got in the Mr. Love: Queen's Choice TV Series BLURAY (Limited Edition) from Anime Limited. The Undead Unluck Complete Series BLURAY (Limited Edition) came in quite a bit early from Viz and we got in the Nasu: Summer In Andalusia BLURAY about a week early from AnimEigo.

IN THE NEWS
Tokyo's Toshima Ward, the home of the famous shopping district Ikebukuro, announced that it renamed Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome Street as Animate Street on March 3. The street happens to host several anime, manga, and game stores, including the Animate chain's flagship Ikebururo store, which Guinness World Records certified as "the largest anime shop/store in the world." Toshima Ward stated, “With input from locals, we decided on a familiar, approachable name.” The ward finalized the decision to rename the street on March 1. It explained the decision was in part due to the increased interest of anime and manga in the area and in response to residents' input. The ward also included a map of and photos showing the respective ends of Animate Street.
Considering all the local business taxes we've paid over the years, I think Winchester should name a street after RACS, or at least a corner bus stop... ;-)
Webtoon Entertainment Inc. reported big losses for Q4 and the full year on higher sales, with asset impairments and unfavorable currency fluctuation the biggest drivers of the loss. The company lost around $153 million in Q4, up from a $33 million loss in Q4 2023; and lost $214 million for the full year, up from a $135 million loss in 2023. Asset writedowns contributed $70 million to the losses, pretty similar to $63 million in writedowns in 2023.
Funko reported losses for Q4 and full year 2024, albeit smaller than in the previous year, with continuing U.S. sales declines. Funko lost $1.5 million in Q4, an improvement from the $10.8 million loss in Q4 2023. For the year, Funko lost $14.7 million, improved from a $154.1 million loss in 2023. Global sales increased a slight 0.9%, from $291.2 million in Q4 2023 to $293.7 million in Q4 2024, but U.S. sales, where Funko has been warning of consumer weakness, lagged, down 9.7% from $197.4 million to $178.2 million for the quarter.
The United States Postal Service is making some changes to how it delivers mail as part of cost cutting measures. The moves are expected to save the USPS at least $36 billion over the next 10 years through reduced transportation costs, improved plant productivity, and elimination of unnecessary facilities. The biggest change comes in how First-Class mail, periodicals, marketing mail, and package services are delivered throughout the country. Depending on where you live, you may experience faster or slower delivery times as the agency will be implementing a new system for how deliveries are processed. The USPS says 80% of services won’t be impacted by the move and all deliveries will still fall within the existing five-day service standard day range for First-Class Mail. Day ranges for end-to-end marketing mail, periodicals and package services will be shortened. However, some will experience slightly longer than usual delivery times as part of the changes. When the moves were first announced last year, the USPS indicated that rural areas may see mail delivered a day or two later than normal, but still within the standard five-day delivery window. Those who live closer to a USPS hub may experience faster delivery times.
Kakao Entertainment, the parent company of webtoon platform Tapas, released its 6th Anti-Piracy White Paper on February 25, marking a significant expansion in its efforts to combat the illegal distribution of intellectual property (IP). The latest white paper introduces the industry's first comprehensive anti-piracy system for web novels in addition to webtoons, highlighting the company's evolving strategy to protect its digital content more effectively. According to the white paper, between July and December 2024, Kakao Entertainment's Global Anti-Piracy Task Force (P.CoK) blocked approximately 240 million piracy cases worldwide. This included significant advancements in monitoring web novel piracy, leveraging its Trusted Copyright Removal Program (TCRP) partner status with Google, and cracking down on illegal secondary derivative products. Additionally, in December 2024, the team successfully tracked down and shut down an illegal English-language web novel piracy website it called "W." It also targeted unauthorized translations, illegal uploads on e-commerce platforms, blogs, and open community platforms that distributed pirated web novels in North America.
