*** ANIME CORNER UPDATES ***
|

Updates
No delays, cancelations, or other studio screw ups to report this week (thank goodness!), just a few new license announcements out of Anime Central from last weekend...
Seems Funimation has grabbed the rights to the Eureka Seven AO TV series and also the King of Thorn Film. Sentai blew out everyone else announcing that they have picked up 4 new shows - Cluster Edge, Hakuoki, Upotte!! and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto. And NIS announced that they have picked up the awesome Bunny Drop, which we already have up for pre-order for the August premium box release.
Oh yeah, and the tricksters over at AniPlex said they are going to re-release another Baccano BD boxed set, this one just being not as pretty as the last one that they did as a 'limited edition' with Funimation's dub on it. No word on what the price will be yet, except that it will be set above whatever the level is that 95% of Anime fans can afford for that particular type of release...
And finally, I wanted to mention that Stu Levy came out of hiding this week to announce that, after shopping every other publisher for a year and having every door in the industry shut in his face, he finally found someone to finance the re-release of the Hetalia manga. He talked the folks in Iowa into doing it, so we'll be seeing vol #3 out in June, and reprints of the first 2 volumes (which will not please anyone who bought a copy from an Amazon seller for $100). Don't take this as some big comeback move for TokyoPop though, Stu had a special agreement with Gentosha for the rights to Hetalia. Sometimes, good things take time - plus, Stu really needs the money...

NIS Announces Bunny Drop DVD/BD Premium Edition for August! NIS has sent over the paperwork for their Bunny Drop DVD/BD premium edition box and we now have it up on the store site for pre-order: Bunny Drop Complete Collection DVD/BD Combo Set (Premium Edition) This Premium Edition boxed set contains episodes 1-11 plus bonus short episodes 2.5, 3.5, 6.5 & 8.5 and a full-color, 28-page hardcover art book featuring in-depth story and character information and luscious art (I love the word luscious!) Release date is set for August 7th. Synopsis: Daikichi, a 30-year-old bachelor, meets the 6-year-old girl Rin at his grandfather Souichi's funeral. It is there that Daikichi and his family learn that Rin is Souichi's direct descendant. When the topic of who would care for her comes up, the family shirks all responsibility of raising this "shameful" child. Reacting emotionally, Daikichi declares his intention to take Rin into his home. This is the story of two very different individuals coming together under one roof and learning what it means to be a family, an experience that teaches Daikichi what it means to be a parent.

Odds and Sods 4Kids will auction its Yu-Gi-Oh! rights on June 5th, with an affiliate of the Saban Capital Group the stalking horse bidder with a bid of $10 million, the bankruptcy court ordered on Monday. As the stalking horse bidder, the Saban company will receive a termination fee if it does not acquire the rights. 4Kids filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a year ago, and settled the lawsuit over its rights to the Yu-Gi-Oh! property two months ago. Meanwhile 4Kids, having shed its most potent license, has signed a deal that will give it international rights to the 52-episode Beastkeeper cartoon series produced in Italy by Mondo TV, Starbright, and Ponpoko Productions.
They can keep Beastkeeper, I just hope the Anime companies have finally learned to keep their stuff away from these guys.
The "30th Anniversary Macross Super Dimension Exhibition ~Valkyrie de Sasotte!~" opened on Saturday at the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The event features a full-scale replica of a VF-25F Messiah Valkyrie variable fighter (in the intermediate GERWALK mode) as its centerpiece. However, due to the small size of the venue, only the nose and arms of the vehicle will be on display during the exhibit's stops in Tokyo (April 28-May 6) and Nagoya (June 1-3). The exhibition will then head to Osaka with the complete replica, from the feet to the cockpit.
Man, I'd REALLY like to see that! So cool!
Japanese distributor TC Entertainment confirmed that it will release Hells, Yoshiki Yamakawa and MADHOUSE's 2008 anime film adaptation of Sin'Ichi Hiromoto's Hells Angels manga, on Blu-ray Disc with English subtitles on August 3. The "dark fantasy that is full of cynical gags" follows a girl's journey to hell and back. The Blu-ray will come with the original Japanese soundtrack in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1ch surround and Linear PCM 2.0ch stereo, and the limited first edition will have a jacket illustrated by Hiromoto himself. It will retail for 5,040 yen (about US$63), tax included.
This is starting to become the trend with productions that the Japanese feel there is little opportunity to licensing overseas. They just throw a subtitled track on them and hope people in North America and Europe want them enough to pay $20-$30 an episode. ~sigh~
The K-ON film has earned over 1.9 billion yen (about US$23.7 million) at the box office. The film opened in 137 theaters on December 3, and it continues to play in some theaters, including two in Tokyo. To celebrate the recently announced Blu-ray Disc/DVD release, the film will return to Tokyo's Shinjuku Piccadilly theater starting on May 12. The film's theatrical pamphlet became the highest selling pamphlet in that theater's history.
It also has helped sell a million guitars that no one will ever actually learn how to play... -_^
The Nijigen shop of the cosplay goods maker Cospa will release Homura Akemi's pair of eyeglasses from the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime at the end of September. The 6,300-yen (about US$78) glasses feature a distinctive translucent-red frame with no rims on the top of the lens. Unlike with some cosplay glasses, owners can replace the lenses on these eyeglasses with actual prescription lenses; the Coolens store chain helped develop these eyeglasses, and it can swap in prescription lenses in 45 minutes for 2,625 yen (US$33).
One of the best cos-play items ever - fully functional!
And speaking of cos-play stuff, the Japanese project Neurowear sold 3,000 pairs of its Necomimi headwear in two hours at the Nico Nico Chōkaigi convention this past weekend. Neurowear offered the moving headbands at the special event price of 7,900 yen (about US$97), before the regular retail release at 8,980 yen (about US$111). Neurowear stocked 5,000 sets of cat-ears for the event but had to hastily bring in more units after the product sold so quickly. Rather than a standard headband with cat ears on it, Neurowear claims that Necomimi detects the brainwaves emitted by the wearer and moves the ears accordingly - twitching, folding down, or perking back up. The ears come in white but can be modified for other colors and patterns. The company also sold units at Seattle's Sakura-Con and Honolulu's Kawaii Kon conventions. NeuroSky, the company that developed the cat ears' brainwave technology, demonstrated Necomimi at the United Kingdom's Gadget Show Live event last month in Birmingham, England. The American news magazine Time named the "smart cat ears" as one of the best 50 inventions of 2011.
Now before you ask me when they will be available over here, these do have a North America version ready but I'm not sure they will have any significant production on them for a few more months. Until then they will be scarce and probably only sold at events here by the company. I'm hoping we can make these available to our customers by the holiday season this year.
The website for the American retail chain Hot Topic is currently selling Hatsune Miku merchandise such as T-shirts, a wall scroll, playing cards, and a cell phone charm. The girl's T-shirt (pictured at right) retails for US$22.50. Another Hatsune Miku T-shirt, which is listed in men's sizes, retails for US$20.50-$22.50. The 31 inch by 43 inch polyester wallscroll is retailing for US$18.00. The "imported" cell phone charm retails for US$6.50 and the "imported" deck of playing cards retails for US$6.00. Additionally, the website is selling a wall scroll featuring Kagamine Rin and Kagamine Len for US$18.00. The wall scrolls are listed as online exclusives, and the Hatsune Miku girls T-shirt and the Kagamine Rin and Len wall scroll are listed as a Hot Topic exclusives.
We call Hot Topic a JAFBR - 'just another fucking big retailer' who knows nothing about Anime but is trying to cash in on this weeks hot niche in the market to try to bring a little more 'coolness' to their catalog. I love how they list the charms and scrolls as 'imported' even though they are just stuff Great Eastern makes here for the North American market under license. Sure, they are imported - from a factory in China. Someone should tell them that in the Anime community 'imported' means produced in Japan or produced specifically for the Japanese market, and 'not imported' means produced for sale everywhere else under license. They also list that stuff as 'hot topic exclusives', which of course, is total bullshit. Assholes.
That's it for this issue. Have a happy Cinco de Mayo, and enjoy your Anime! :-)
