Anna Hyatt Huntington was known for her characteristic animal portraits, which she often based on real animals. This bronze in particular was inspired by Señor Lopez, the Bronx Zoo's first feline resident in the Lion House that Huntington made sketches of when he first arrived in the early 1900s. These studies of Señor Lopez inspired "Reaching Jaguar" and it's companion "Jaguar" - stone versions of the pair stand prominently at the Bronx Zoo in New York City and Mariners Museum Park in Newport News, Virginia. Bronze casts of "Reaching Jaguar" in various sizes can be found in the collections of the Isabella Stuart Gardener Museum, Boston; Cleveland Museum of Art; Brookgreen Gardens, Murrels Inlet; and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson.
