Details:

Anna Murray-Douglass Academy School No. 12 and Enrico Fermi School No. 17 are two of four locations in the City of Rochester that have been chosen to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Organizers of a local Indigenous Peoples’ committee selected Schools No. 12 and No. 17 for this distinction, and students will plant a white pine tree, which symbolizes peace. Sites were chosen in the City of Rochester based on certain criteria, including an area in need of trees and proximity to youth, so children can be involved in the planting process.

On Wednesday, October 5, representatives from the Indigenous Peoples’ Committee will visit Schools No. 12 and No. 17 to educate students on the importance of trees and how to plant and care for them.

“This is a historical moment for our Rochester community,” said Katie Trepanier, School No. 12’s Principal. “It is important that our scholars are at the forefront of learning and leading. They are our future leaders as we honor the legacy of Native American lives and communities in our area. This wonderful opportunity is in direct alignment with our school’s goal of an inclusive curriculum for all. Thank you to the Tonawanda Onondowaga Indigenous Peoples' Day committee and the City of Rochester for engaging our School No. 12 community in this beautiful way.”

“Enrico Fermi School No. 17 is excited to announce a collaboration with the Sierra Club of Rochester and the City of Rochester to plant a white pine on school grounds,” said Yajaira Nguyen, School No. 17’s Principal. “The White Pine is the Haudenosaunee Tree of Peace, and Enrico Fermi is located in the original Haudenosaunee territory. At Enrico Fermi, our diversity is our strength. This opportunity will allow our students to learn and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”

The schools will host celebrations on Wednesday, October 5. School No. 12 will hold its ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at 999 South Avenue, and School No. 17 will hold its ceremony at noon at 158 Orchard Street. At each location, students will plant white pine trees in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
