Anne Sullivan Elementary School

Message From the Principal

Hello, Sullivan Families,

The start of school is right around the corner! I hope that you and your family have been able to unwind and enjoy everything that summer in Chicago has to offer. The staff at Anne Sullivan has been hard at work over the past weeks preparing for the 2019-20 school year, and we are looking forward to greeting your kids on the first day of school! Our staff is dedicated to educating the whole child, and we place a high priority on fostering the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students. As a school community, we truly believe that all students can achieve, and we are eager to join with families as partners in education.

Over the next few weeks, please take a moment to visit the District and Sullivan webpages at https://www.d23.org . The website has up-to-date calendar information, helpful parent resources, information about school programs, and links to teachers’ webpages. We will update the site regularly throughout the year, so be sure to bookmark it and check back often! Click the button below to go to the Sullivan Virtual Backpack where you will find the lunch menu, bus routes, iPad forms and information, calendar, supply lists, and drop off/pick up maps.

Returning families might notice a new color scheme and logo throughout this email. Over the past year, we have been working on selecting a new mascot for Sullivan. After gathering input from students, staff worked to narrow down the options and created proposals in groups. The staff collaboratively made a final selection, and we are excited to announce the new mascot at the start of the school year during our kickoff assembly on Friday, August 23rd. For now, the only clue is that the mascot has paws. We will announce a new clue on the announcements each day during our first week of school leading up to the assembly!

Please read this newsletter carefully for all of the important back-to-school information you need. We are looking forward to greeting families at the sneak peak on Monday the 19th and to the first day of school with our students on the 20th!

Warmly,

Traci Meziere
Principal

Class Placement and Bus Route Information
This year, all class placement and bus route information will be sent home via email on Wednesday, August 14th. These automated emails will go out throughout the morning.

If you do not receive an email, first check your spam folder. If you do not receive an email by 2PM, please call the Sullivan office for assistance.
First Day of School Information
The first day of school is Tuesday, August 20th. It is a full day, and bus services will be provided. Weather permitting, all students should meet their teacher on the playground at 8:15. A.M. on the first day of school. Teachers will walk their classes into the building. We ask parents to take pictures and say goodbyes on the playground that morning. Parents should not accompany students to the classroom on the first day. This allows our students and teachers to begin their first day together in a timely manner.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
Please refer to this map which details the drop off and pick up procedures at the rear entrance of Sullivan. For our students' safety, only buses are allowed in front of school during arrival and dismissal times. Staff will be in the drop off lane to assist children in exiting the car. Please do not get out of your car when you are in the drop off or pick up lane. If you need to walk your child into the building, please park in an available visitor spot before entering the building.

At dismissal, staff will help your child into the car. If you have children at both Ross and Sullivan, you may pick up and drop off at either school entrance. Students may walk through the building to either school for pick up and drop off. We appreciate your compliance with our pick up and drop off procedures, as this helps to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff.
School Hours, Absence, and Tardy Information
The school day begins at 8:25 A.M. and ends at 2:25 P.M. Morning supervision begins at 8:15 A.M. Arrangements for earlier supervision may be possible through our Extended Day Program. For more information about this fee-based program, please call our EDP Director, Kris Lebrecht, at 847-870-5370.

If your child arrives at school after 8:30 A.M., you are required to enter the building to sign your child in. If your child will be arriving after 8:45 A.M. and is planning to purchase a school lunch, please call the Sullivan office to notify us. Absences should be reported using the Sullivan Absence Line at 847-870-3872. Please leave your child’s name and the reason for the absence when using this number. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety of all of our students.
Raptor Visitor Management System
As you may recall, we piloted the Raptor System in the spring of last year. All visitors to the school will need a drivers license or photo ID in order to enter the school. Please read below or click here for a letter from Dr. Angelaccio with further details about the Raptor System and school safety.
Parent Night
Anne Sullivan Elementary School Parent Night will be held on Wednesday, August 28th from 6:00-7:30 P.M. This is a chance for parents to meet the Sullivan staff and to learn about the curriculum and programs at Sullivan. A detailed schedule for the evening will be sent home at the start of the year.
PTO News
To kick off the new school year, the PTO invites all families to attend Munchkins in the Park on the Betsy Ross Playground from 8:45-10:00 A.M . immediately following the Sneak Peek on August 19th. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces from prior school years, and to meet new classmates and families.
