Dear Sullivan Families,
We have had a busy first three weeks back at Sullivan, and we are looking forward to finishing the last school week of January and heading into February. Our students completed their FastBridge and iReady reading and math assessments over the past two weeks, and our teachers will be reviewing the testing data over the next few weeks as we look to ensure our instructional strategies meet the needs of our students.
The new year means the start of state assessment time, and we will begin the first of those assessments in February. The test will be taken by all of our English language learners and is called ACCESS, which stands for Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State. It is comprised of four parts, listening, reading, speaking, and writing, in order to assess students annually on their acquisition of English language skills. Parents can also expect last year's ACCESS scores to come home in backpacks today as well. In April, all Sullivan students will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), and 5th Grade students will take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA).
Finally, we want to thank parents for working with us over the past several weeks as we have seen increased incidences of COVID cases in our schools. Our teachers have done an amazing job balancing in-person and distance learning for students in quarantine, and our entire district team has worked together to keep kids in school and learning. Thank you, families, for your understanding and cooperation throughout the past several weeks! As a reminder, if your child needs to quarantine due to a COVID diagnosis or as a close contact, please remember we need one school day to allow us to get a distance learning plan and materials together for your child. Hopefully, we are at the end of the holiday spike in cases at Sullivan!
Have a wonderful weekend, and stay warm!
Best,
Traci Meziere

My child is vaccinated...Now WHAT?
|
|
Students who are in close contact with a COVID positive individual 14 DAYS PAST their 2nd Dose do NOT have to quarantine if they are asymptomatic.
We are asking parents to share their child's vaccination card directly with the school nurse so that we can begin to track vaccination status and continue to limit the number of exclusions.
Copies of vaccination cards can be emailed directly to the school nurse, Mrs. Quatman at kquatman@d23.org, or sent to school with your student.

It is January, and it is COLD outside! Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Elementary students have outdoor recess whenever possible. Students perform better when they get outdoors, even if only for a few minutes. We follow the recess guidelines below:
- Outdoor Recess: 10 degrees F and higher (including wind chill)
- Inside Recess: below 10 degrees F (including wind chill)
When the weather is snowy, students must have boots, gloves, and snow pants to play in the snow. Those who don’t must stay on the blacktop area. Parents should assist children in preparing and wearing appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.

5th Grade students are working hard on their novel studies in January! Each class is reading a different novel and learning and discussing together. Here, Mrs. Lett's class looks for examples of figurative language in the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech.

This week in Music Class, Mrs. Luehr guided our 5th-grade students in creating music using GarageBand on their iPads. The students chose one of the photos to the left and created original compositions inspired by the photos. Click here to listen to a few examples of their inspired creations!

Our 4th-Grade students are awesome at independent work! Mrs. Broms' students were focused on their independent animal research projects, and Mrs. Stasi's students worked on January writing prompts, Raz, and iReady during literacy rotations this week!

Parent-teacher conferences are coming up on the evenings of February 10th and February 17th. This year, we are piloting the use of Sign-up Genius to allow parents choose their conference times in most classes. The Sign-up Genius link will be sent out at 3PM on February 1st.
While most conferences will be held virtually again this spring using Google Meets, if you desire an in-person conference, please contact your child's teacher.

|
Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place whether we are learning in person or virtually. Our expectations matrix is included below for your reference. Please review these expectations with your children.
