Dear Sullivan Families,
We definitely enjoyed this beautiful, sunny week after the gloomy and rainy one that preceded it! It was great to be outside each day for recess and enjoy the sunshine and warm afternoons.
We are looking forward to the start of the parent-teacher conference window next week. Conferences are a great time for us to connect with families, share the ways your child has grown during these first months of the school year, and offer suggestions to help you support your child as they continue their journey of learning and growth this year.
Please read on for information about:
- PTO Volunteer opportunities for AVIC
- Halloween Festivities
- Veterans' Day Celebration
- Holiday Giving
- Sullivan Musical
- Pawsitive Panthers
- Classroom Snapshots.
Enjoy the weekend!
Warmly,
Traci Meziere
Principal

As the holidays approach, we in District 23 are again partnering with our fantastic PTO to offer you a chance to contribute to our students and their families in need this holiday season. The PTO is offering their gift card buying service early specifically for you to purchase gift cards (in $10 increments) for these families. Please click on the flyer below which has the link to indicate your donation amount. Checks are made out to the PTO but should be sent to your school's office. Checks are due to the office by Friday, November 5.
Please note that this is not the same as the PTO's annual gift card fundraiser that allows you to purchase gift cards for yourself or your loved ones. That will follow this event. Watch for more on that from the PTO!
As always, a big thank you to our incredible PTO partners and to YOU for your generosity!

It's Book Fair Time Again!
|
|
Sullivan School will host a Follett Book Fair in the library Oct. 21 - 29 during the school day.
Books will be shipped to the school after the fair closes Oct. 29th. Books in school will not be restocked, so ordering online is a great option for students who visit the library later in the week.

Veterans Day is right around the corner, and this continues to be an important recognition and educational moment for us at Sullivan and across the District. This year, we will again join with our veterans in the Village of Mount Prospect's Veterans Day celebration, which will be streamed live (and available for viewing after) on Veterans Day itself, Thursday, November 11. Our Sullivan Ambassadors made a video contribution to this celebration, as did our friends at MacArthur. Sullivan students
Please feel free to watch the event yourself. (The whole program is about one hour.) You will find the links below. Also, if you know of a veteran, please pass along to them too, as the time and energy here from the veterans, the Village of Mount Prospect, surrounding schools, and us here in D23 are all acts of deep appreciation meant to honor all of our veterans, in this community and beyond.

Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place whether we are learning in person or virtually. Our expectations matrix is included below for your reference. Please review these expectations with your children.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
|
|
This year, our parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually between October 25th and November 12th. Please be on the lookout for a communication from your child's teacher with times available to schedule a conference. Conferences will generally run between 15 and 20 minutes. If you require a translator for your conference, please let your child's teacher know.

Art Volunteers In the Classroom (AVIC): In-Person Volunteer Opportunity
Interested in a fun, low commitment classroom volunteering opportunity? The AVIC program offers parent volunteers an opportunity to present short art appreciation lessons and related projects in the classroom during the school year (once a month November-April, with no session in December) for 1st through 5th-grade students. Each lesson involves discussing an artist and one of their works of art. Dates and times are flexible - volunteers will coordinate schedules with classroom teachers. If you can only commit to one or two sessions that's great - multiple volunteers can register for each class.
No art experience or expertise is required, and all project and discussion materials will be provided. Optional parent zoom orientation sessions will be scheduled in mid-to-late October to provide additional details and answer questions.
Per Governor Pritzker's Executive Order, parent volunteers will be required to present proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test to enter classrooms, wear masks at all times, and maintain appropriate social distance from students.
Please click the button below if you would like to volunteer for your child's classroom:

Our goal to keep students in school can be supported by an optional screening and testing process currently being planned for District 23.
Through a partnership with the Federal and State governments, the SHIELD Illinois program is now available to all schools in Illinois, free of charge.
This 3rd party laboratory analysis uses the SHIELD saliva based test developed by the University of Illinois. More information can be found HERE.
We hope to launch weekly screening and on demand testing to monitor local community spread, identify presymptomatic or asymptomatic cases, and assist in making informed quarantining decisions. It is our goal to begin on October 1st.
Participation is optional, but requires parental consent. Please complete the form below if you are interested and willing to have your child participate in this program. More information and details will be shared as it becomes available.

We are excited to announce that beginning October 18th, our foodservice partner, Organic Life will be offering a hot lunch option in addition to the featured cold entree option to all students at lunchtime. These lunch options are available at no cost to students. While our meal choices are still a bit limited, we are working on rolling out a third meal option in November!
