Panther Post

October 8, 2021
Dear Sullivan Families,

Our students and teachers have been busy the past few weeks at Sullivan! Our 4th grade has enjoyed learning about Immigration, and they are looking forward to their classroom Ellis Island simulations next week. 5th-grade students have wrapped up Unit 1 in Math, and our Band and Orchestra students are excited to be starting their early whole-group lessons!

Starting the week of October 18th, we will be adding a hot lunch option from Organic Life in addition to the cold lunch option. Please go to the Food Service page for more information.

Your child's Illinois Assessment of Readiness reports were sent home today, so check your child's backpack! Please read on for information about Holiday Giving, our Pawsome Panthers of the Week, our NEW Game Club, and Halloween Festivities at Sullivan this year.

Have a wonderful three-day weekend!
Warmly,

Traci Meziere

Holiday Giving
As the holidays approach, we in District 23 are again partnering with our fantastic PTO to offer you a chance to contribute to our students and their families in need this holiday season. The PTO is offering their gift card buying service early specifically for you to purchase gift cards (in $10 increments) for these families. Please click on the flyer below which has the link to indicate your donation amount. Checks are made out to the PTO but should be sent to your school's office. Checks are due to the office by Friday, November 5.

Please note that this is not the same as the PTO's annual gift card fundraiser that allows you to purchase gift cards for yourself or your loved ones. That will follow this event. Watch for more on that from the PTO!

As always, a big thank you to our incredible PTO partners and to YOU for your generosity!
Game Club
We are starting a new club for our Sullivan Students - GAME CLUB! Each week the students will play a different board game, and will hopefully find a new favorite to play at home with the family! The club will meet on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30, for two 10-week sessions. Session 1 runs November 4 - January 27. Session 2 runs February 3 - April 14. If your child would like to sign up, please fill out this Google Form! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Espinos at nespinos@d23.org.
Sullivan Snapshots

September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. To celebrate, the students in Mrs. Mkrtschjan’s homeroom and Mrs. Espinos’s Core Plus group researched famous Hispanic-Americans. They enjoyed learning about some interesting and inspiring people from the Hispanic culture. The students were proud to share their discoveries on the announcements and in the hallway display case.

This week, fifth graders in Mrs. Schlomann's class were using their knowledge about nonfiction text features. The students were put into groups to look through nonfiction books to find examples of the 8 types of text features. They then created posters to showcase their findings. It was a fun way for the students to share their knowledge!

It's Book Fair Time Again!
Sullivan School will host a Follett Book Fair in the library Oct. 21 - 29 during the school day with one evening of shopping Oct. 21 from 3:00-7:00.

The Online Fair has begun! Just click on the link https://efairs.follettbookfairs.com/guest/home?classCode=Z6GP9
Books will be shipped to the school after the fair closes Oct. 29th. Books in school will not be restocked, so ordering online is a great option for students who visit the library later in the week.
Pride and Safety at Sullivan
As you may have read about and/or seen in the news, there have been Tik Tok challenges, nationwide, that call on students to engage in inappropriate behavior at school. These challenges are not aligned with who we are as a school community and are directly against our PRIDE and/or Panther code of ethics. Many of these challenges are criminal offenses, as some are bordering on assault, theft, or destruction of property.

Fortunately, we have not seen the same difficulty with these that some of our neighboring schools have. Still, we know that one of the reasons why our students succeed in class and with making the right choices is because of the difference YOU make in taking time to talk to your child about expectations and doing the right thing, just as we talk about having PRIDE at Mac and following the Panther Expectations at Sullivan. So, please speak with your child about the serious nature of these challenges and help educate them that these are not appropriate for school. Any student who chooses to carry out any of these challenges at school will be subject to school and police consequences. If your child has any information on these occurrences at school, please encourage them to speak to their principal or another trusted adult at school.

As always, we appreciate your partnership and time!
Panther Expectations
Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place whether we are learning in person or virtually. Our expectations matrix is included below for your reference. Please review these expectations with your children.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
This year, our parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually between October 25th and November 12th. Please be on the lookout for a communication from your child's teacher with times available to schedule a conference. Conferences will generally run between 15 and 20 minutes. If you require a translator for your conference, please let your child's teacher know.

Shield Testing
Our goal to keep students in school can be supported by an optional screening and testing process currently being planned for District 23.

Through a partnership with the Federal and State governments, the SHIELD Illinois program is now available to all schools in Illinois, free of charge.

This 3rd party laboratory analysis uses the SHIELD saliva based test developed by the University of Illinois. More information can be found HERE.

We hope to launch weekly screening and on demand testing to monitor local community spread, identify presymptomatic or asymptomatic cases, and assist in making informed quarantining decisions. It is our goal to begin on October 1st.
Participation is optional, but requires parental consent. Please complete the form below if you are interested and willing to have your child participate in this program. More information and details will be shared as it becomes available.
We are excited to announce that beginning October 18th, our foodservice partner, Organic Life will be offering a hot lunch option in addition to the featured cold entree option to all students at lunchtime. These lunch options are available at no cost to students. While our meal choices are still a bit limited, we are working on rolling out a third meal option in November!
Community Partner Resources
Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, and Wheeling Police Departments will be participating in the U.S. DEA’s National Drug Take-Back Day. Bring your pills for disposal to the following locations, on October 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

Arlington Heights Police Department – 200 E. Sigwalt St., Arlington Heights, IL
Buffalo Grove Police Department – 46 Raupp Blvd., Buffalo Grove, IL
Mount Prospect Police Department – 911 E. Kensington Rd., Mt Prospect, IL
Wheeling Police Department – 1 Community Blvd., Wheeling, IL

(Sites cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps - only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Attached is additional information on the event, along with a list of year-round locations for safe medication disposal in Wheeling Township. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 23 Take Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com
