Dear Sullivan Families,
We have reached the end of the first trimester and a well-deserved Thanksgiving Break. As I think back to this time last year, I am so thankful that we have had the kids in person this whole year! While our teachers and students did an outstanding job during distance learning and hybrid last year, it is wonderful to see kids and staff interacting in school each day and building positive and supportive classroom communities.
Coming up after Thanksgiving Break, 4th and 5th grade will be starting their third units of the Second Step curriculum, both of which focus on empathy and kindness. Click the buttons below for the unit overviews.
Have a wonderful week of relaxation with your family and friends, and Happy Thanksgiving from the Sullivan Family to yours!
Warmly,
Traci Meziere
Principal

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
|
|
-
Please note that we begin letting students into the building at 8:15 AM. We ask that you do not line up prior to 8 AM to allow the MacArthur buses and cars to drop off their students.
- Our pick-up line begins shortly after the release of school at 2:25 PM.
-
All cars entering off Schoenbeck MUST enter the lot from the northernmost entrance near Palatine Road.
- Please do not drive into the bus pick-up and drop-off area of the parking lot.
- If you arrive after the car drop-off entrance has closed (8:30 AM), you must park in the visitor parking in front of the Admin building near the corner of Palatine and Schoenbeck, and walk your child across the parking lot.
- Please drive carefully and follow the directions of our staff. They are working to ensure the safety of ALL students and staff.
|
|
As we move into the cooler months, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Elementary students have outdoor recess whenever possible. Students perform better when they get outdoors, even if only for a few minutes. We follow the recess guidelines below:
- Outdoor Recess: 10 degrees F and higher (including wind chill)
- Inside Recess: below 10 degrees F (including wind chill)
When the weather turns snowy, students must have boots, gloves and snow pants to play in the snow. Those who don’t must stay on the blacktop area. Parents should assist children in preparing and wearing appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.

Veterans Day @ Sullivan
This Veterans Day, the Sullivan Ambassadors organized three events to honor veterans. First, we asked students to help create a large American flag, using names and photos of veterans they wanted to honor. Then we asked everyone to wear red, white and blue on Veterans Day. Finally, our Ambassadors organized an Essential Goods Drive to help veterans at the McHenry-based nonprofit organization called Veterans Path to Hope. We had an overwhelming response, filling an entire car. The items will be passed out to the veterans in paper bags decorated by the students, along with a kind note.

Unified PE
Unified PE is back! The kids in Mrs. Nolfi’s SAIL classroom were so excited to add an extra PE class to their weekly schedule. A few students from each of the buddy classrooms, Ms. Sullivan’s 3rd-grade class and Mrs. Travis’s 5th-grade class, meet in the gym on Friday afternoons for some fun activities. These sessions are designed to work on the current PE skills with fewer kids in the gym and more peer interaction between students with and without disabilities. It is the perfect opportunity for all of the students to learn and interact with each other.

This past week, the students in Mrs. Mkrtschjan and Ms. Slowik’s classes have been collaborating on a Southeast region project. As students create their own map of the region, they are strengthening their map skills and are finding creative ways to represent what they learned about the Southeast. After the students learn about all of the regions, they will have their own map of the United States!

Veterans Day is right around the corner, and this continues to be an important recognition and educational moment for us at Sullivan and across the District. This year, we will again join with our veterans in the Village of Mount Prospect's Veterans Day celebration, which will be streamed live (and available for viewing after) on Veterans Day itself, Thursday, November 11. Our Sullivan Ambassadors made a video contribution to this celebration, as did our friends at MacArthur. Sullivan students will watch the presentations as part of our recognition of Veterans Day.
Please feel free to watch the event yourself. (The whole program is about one hour.) You will find the links below. Also, if you know of a veteran, please pass along to them too, as the time and energy here from the veterans, the Village of Mount Prospect, surrounding schools, and us here in D23 are all acts of deep appreciation meant to honor all of our veterans, in this community and beyond.

Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place whether we are learning in person or virtually. Our expectations matrix is included below for your reference. Please review these expectations with your children.

Art Volunteers In the Classroom (AVIC): In-Person Volunteer Opportunity
Interested in a fun, low commitment classroom volunteering opportunity? The AVIC program offers parent volunteers an opportunity to present short art appreciation lessons and related projects in the classroom during the school year (once a month November-April, with no session in December) for 1st through 5th-grade students. Each lesson involves discussing an artist and one of their works of art. Dates and times are flexible - volunteers will coordinate schedules with classroom teachers. If you can only commit to one or two sessions that's great - multiple volunteers can register for each class.
No art experience or expertise is required, and all project and discussion materials will be provided. Optional parent zoom orientation sessions will be scheduled in mid-to-late October to provide additional details and answer questions.
Per Governor Pritzker's Executive Order, parent volunteers will be required to present proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test to enter classrooms, wear masks at all times, and maintain appropriate social distance from students.
Please click the button below if you would like to volunteer for your child's classroom:

Seeking your feedback...
We ask you to please complete a brief survey to share your thoughts about Parent Teacher Conferences. As we use new and improved tools, we recognize that the traditional purpose or goals of PTCs may no longer require traditional Parent Teacher Conferences. We are investigating how best to use the time we have with parents to keep you informed, engaged, and feeling supported by our schools and staff.
Your input will help to inform our plans for Parent Teacher Conferences in the future. Thanks!
