Panther Post

November 5, 2021
Dear Sullivan Families,

It is hard to believe that November is already upon us! We have enjoyed connecting with parents over the past two weeks during parent-teacher conferences. Conferences are a great opportunity to build positive relationships between home and school so that we can work together to support the growth of your children!

This week, we held our first Ross/Sullivan Parent Coffee of the year. Dr. Curtis, Mrs. Rieger, Ms. Whitcomb, and I shared information about the difference between Social Conflict and Bullying and facilitated a great conversation among the attendees. A link to the presentation and video can be found here. mark your calendars for our January Parent Coffee, which will be held on January 19th at 6:30 PM.

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
  • Please note that we begin letting students into the building at 8:15 AM. We ask that you do not line up prior to 8 AM to allow the MacArthur buses and cars to drop off their students.
  • Our pick-up line begins shortly after the release of school at 2:25 PM.
  • All cars entering off Schoenbeck MUST enter the lot from the northernmost entrance near Palatine Road.
  • Please do not drive into the bus pick-up and drop-off area of the parking lot.
  • If you arrive after the car drop-off entrance has closed (8:30 AM), you must park in the visitor parking in front of the Admin building near the corner of Palatine and Schoenbeck, and walk your child across the parking lot.
  • Please drive carefully and follow the directions of our staff. They are working to ensure the safety of ALL students and staff.
Cold Weather Reminders
As we move into the cooler months, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Elementary students have outdoor recess whenever possible. Students perform better when they get outdoors, even if only for a few minutes. We follow the recess guidelines below:

  • Outdoor Recess: 10 degrees F and higher (including wind chill)
  • Inside Recess: below 10 degrees F (including wind chill)

When the weather turns snowy, students must have boots, gloves and snow pants to play in the snow. Those who don’t must stay on the blacktop area. Parents should assist children in preparing and wearing appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.

Sullivan Snapshots
Mrs. Pennell's math class got competitive with a team game this week that helped them review essential concepts from the unit.
The rainy and cold Halloween weather didn't stop our Sullivan students and teachers from having a blast at their classroom parties. The students enjoyed crafts and games courtesy of our PTO volunteers. Thanks to the parents who helped make our parties a success!

Mrs. Yager's students enjoyed their persuasive writing activity for banned book week that focused on saving a book they love from being banned. The students' pumpkin designs were so creative!
Pawsitive Panthers
Aiden is a Pawsitive Panther because he is focused and motivated to do his best. He demonstrates safe, respectful and responsible behavior all day, everyday. He is a leader and a great role model for other students.
Olivia is PAWSOME! She is a role model student who tries her best in everything she does. Olivia is kind to all and participates every day. She follows all expectations and has a PAWSITIVE attitude!
Veterans' Day
Veterans Day is right around the corner, and this continues to be an important recognition and educational moment for us at Sullivan and across the District. This year, we will again join with our veterans in the Village of Mount Prospect's Veterans Day celebration, which will be streamed live (and available for viewing after) on Veterans Day itself, Thursday, November 11. Our Sullivan Ambassadors made a video contribution to this celebration, as did our friends at MacArthur. Sullivan students will watch the presentations as part of our recognition of Veterans Day.

Please feel free to watch the event yourself. (The whole program is about one hour.) You will find the links below. Also, if you know of a veteran, please pass along to them too, as the time and energy here from the veterans, the Village of Mount Prospect, surrounding schools, and us here in D23 are all acts of deep appreciation meant to honor all of our veterans, in this community and beyond.
Panther Expectations
Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place whether we are learning in person or virtually. Our expectations matrix is included below for your reference. Please review these expectations with your children.

Art Volunteers In the Classroom (AVIC): In-Person Volunteer Opportunity

Interested in a fun, low commitment classroom volunteering opportunityThe AVIC program offers parent volunteers an opportunity to present short art appreciation lessons and related projects in the classroom during the school year (once a month November-April, with no session in December) for 1st through 5th-grade students. Each lesson involves discussing an artist and one of their works of art. Dates and times are flexible - volunteers will coordinate schedules with classroom teachers. If you can only commit to one or two sessions that's great - multiple volunteers can register for each class.

No art experience or expertise is required, and all project and discussion materials will be provided. Optional parent zoom orientation sessions will be scheduled in mid-to-late October to provide additional details and answer questions.

Per Governor Pritzker's Executive Order, parent volunteers will be required to present proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test to enter classrooms, wear masks at all times, and maintain appropriate social distance from students.
