Dear Sullivan Families,
We have had a great few weeks at Sullivan! I have been able to get into all of our classrooms to meet with and connect with the kids and learn a little bit more about them. I shared a little bit about me and the things that are important in my life, and the kids enjoyed learning about the antics of my dogs, Ollie and Finn! We also had a chance to talk about what we are grateful for, the highlights of our week, and the goals we have for the year. I am so excited that our year is off to a positive start!
Please read on to see information about the following:
- Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
- Parent-Teacher Conference Information
- PTO Language Adventures Program
- Pawsome Panthers
- Book Fair Information

Candor Health Presentations
|

As a part of our health curriculum, we contract with Candor Health Education to deliver our puberty education content. Teachers from Candor Health will be at Sullivan on October 8th, delivering a program called Puberty I - Understanding Changes to our 4th and 5th-grade students. The program covers eight physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty and is aligned to the ISBE Health and Social-Emotional Learning Standards as well as our D23 Health Curriculum. The students will be separated into single-gender groups, meaning boys and girls will receive instruction separately. Classroom teachers will be present along with the teachers from Candor Health during these sessions.
The Candor Health website provides a brief video overview of the Puberty I program, an FAQ page, and additional resources to talk to your child at home about the changes they will undergo during puberty. For your convenience, the FAQ sheet and the learning standards alignment are attached below.
If you would prefer that your child NOT participate in the presentation from Candor Health, please complete this form no later than Friday, October 1st. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me at tmeziere@d23.org.

We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
Over the past couple of weeks, we are excited to have begun Second Step, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children's social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:
-
Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
-
Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion-management strategies--including stress management for older students--to calm strong feelings.
-
Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others' perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
-
Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
-
S: Say the problem
-
T: Think of solutions
-
E: Explore the outcomes
-
P: Pick a solution
If you have any questions about Second Step, please don't hesitate to contact Ms. Meziere or your child's teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.

Last week, fourth graders in Mrs. Mkrtschjan’s class were introduced to 20 Book Bingo! The students each received a Bingo Board with 20 different categories, such as “a book that teaches me something new” or “a book with a person’s name in the title. Students have all year to get a BINGO by reading 20 books and filling up their board. This week students were excited to work towards achieving Bingo by reading independently and setting up their posters where they will track their progress!

Our 5th Grade students enjoyed their Book Tasting experiences this week in Literacy! They were able to sample selections from a variety of genres and expand their literary palates!

Our goal to keep students in school can be supported by an optional screening and testing process currently being planned for District 23.
Through a partnership with the Federal and State governments, the SHIELD Illinois program is now available to all schools in Illinois, free of charge.
This 3rd party laboratory analysis uses the SHIELD saliva based test developed by the University of Illinois. More information can be found HERE.
We hope to launch weekly screening and on demand testing to monitor local community spread, identify presymptomatic or asymptomatic cases, and assist in making informed quarantining decisions. It is our goal to begin on October 1st.
Participation is optional, but requires parental consent. Please complete the form below if you are interested and willing to have your child participate in this program. More information and details will be shared as it becomes available.
