Panther Post

October 18, 2024

Dear Sullivan Families,

We have reached the end of the first quarter! Across the district, we wrapped up the week with our 4th-grade Ellis Island simulation, a sendoff for our MacArthur State Cross Country runners, and a 2nd-grade music concert! It was a busy Friday, and it was great to welcome so many parents into our schools on this beautiful day! It has been a wonderful start to the year, and we can't wait to see what our students and staff will accomplish during the 4th quarter.

Last week, I was able to share a little bit of my out-of-school life with our students. As an empty-nester, I have taken on the new hobby of gardening. This year, I decided to try my hand at growing a giant pumpkin. Although most of the pumpkins were between 50-80 pounds, I managed to grow one giant that topped out at 530 pounds. Of course, I had to bring it to school to show it off, so enjoy some of the pictures of kids and the pumpkin in this newsletter!

Parent-teacher conference signups will be sent out this afternoon by your child's classroom teacher. Also, check your child's backpack for their Illinois Assessment of Readiness test results from last year. A letter about those results is below. Our Candor Health Presentations are on Tuesday, October 22nd, and we are looking forward to our Halloween Parade and parties on October 31st!

Halloween Guidelines

Halloween is just a couple of weeks away! We know that many kids are already talking about costumes, and this is a good time to remind our families about the Halloween costume guidelines that all D23 Elementary schools share:

  • Costumes should be brought to school. Students will have time to change after lunch, before the Halloween Parade at 1:00 P.M. on October 31st.
  • Costumes should be school-appropriate, not offensive or hurtful to others, and should not include weapons, look-alike weapons, or excessive gore.
  • Appropriate masks must be worn on heads in school and during the parade for safety reasons.

Classroom Halloween parties will be held from 1:30-2:30 PM on October 31st. Room parents will be collaborating with teachers to plan the parties. Please do not send food, candy, or any other items for your child to pass out in the classroom. In addition, no outside food items will be permitted at parties.

Gold Medal Staff Nominations

Want to recognize a D23 staff member? Last year, we had staff members hitting home runs. This year, they are winning gold! Fill out the Form (HERE) to have a staff member be recognized. I know your positive feedback means a lot to our staff. Thanks for making us #PROUD2BD23! Also, watch X and Facebook for staff gold medal winners!

Sullivan Snapshots

Thanks to our amazing 4th grade team and our wonderful parent volunteers who worked so hard to make this year's Ellis Island simulation a success! The students learned what it was like to emigrate to the US and go through customs in new land.

Thanks to our families who joined us for our first Sullivan Game Night! We enjoyed snacks and game time with our students and their families. The kids loved the raffle giveaways as well! We love welcoming families into school and are already planning for Literacy Night in January!

Sullivan students had a new experience last week - they were able to touch a giant pumpkin! Ms. Meziere grew the pumpkin in her yard this summer and brought it for a visit with the kids before it moved to its final destination as the centerpiece of a local Halloween scene!

Mrs. Pennell's 5th-grade students enjoy a demonstration experiment in the Web of Life Unit. Students made predictions about the weight of air and learned about how plants eat air!

Our 4th-grade students are learning about multiples, factors, and prime and composite numbers in math. Mrs. Dreyer's class enjoyed working in partners this week to solve word problems using multiples and factors.

Beth Klein from the Prospect Heights Public Library visited us at Sullivan to introduce this year's Bluestem nominees to our students. Students who read at least four Bluestem books are able to vote for the Illinois Bluestem winner in late February. For information about Bluestem books, click on the picture!
