Panther Post

October 6, 2023

Dear Sullivan Families,

Today finally feels like fall, after several weeks of extended warm weather! If your child is missing any sweatshirts or jackets, please have them check the lost and found. Cooler mornings followed by warmer afternoons mean we have lots of items in the lost and found already!

We have so much going on at Sullivan in October. In addition to our regular academic content, we have some special programs and events coming up this month. Of course, our students are looking forward to our Halloween festivities on October 31st. With the first night of parent-teacher conferences falling the week of Halloween, we will be sending out our conference sign-ups on October 12th. We are utilizing an online sign-up this year, so please watch for communication from your child's teacher on the 12th!

On October 24th, we are again partnering with Candor Health to deliver our Health Education programs. Below, you will find a letter explaining the programs for 4th and 5th-grade students, as well as links to FAQ sheets and a parent page with more detailed information about the content.

Please read on for information about:

  • Halloween Guidelines and Parade
  • Candor Health Presentations
  • MOD Pizza Ambassadors Dining Out event on October 16th
  • Student Recognition
  • Classroom Snapshots
  • Upcoming Parent Events

Halloween Guidelines

Halloween is just a couple of weeks away! We know that many kids are already talking about costumes, and this is a good time to remind our families about the Halloween costume guidelines that all D23 Elementary schools share:

  • Costumes should be brought to school. Students will have time to change after lunch, before the Halloween Parade at 12:45 P.M. on October 31st.
  • Costumes should be school-appropriate, not offensive or hurtful to others, and should not include weapons, look-alike weapons, or excessive gore.
  • Appropriate masks must be worn on heads in school and during the parade for safety reasons.

Classroom Halloween parties will be held from 1:15-2:15 on October 31st. Room parents will be collaborating with teachers to plan the parties. Please do not send food, candy, or any other items for your child to pass out in the classroom. In addition, no outside food items will be permitted at parties.

Sullivan Snapshots

Last week, 4th-grade students learned about farming in the Midwest during our in-school field trip. Educators from Ag in the Classroom came to Sullivan to talk about the importance of agriculture to our region. This experience enhances our new social studies curriculum as students are learning about regions of the United States.

Mrs. Dreyer's class was excited to listen to The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be and create their own hot air balloons highlighting their positive character traits.

Our One Book, Two Schools selection this year is Granny Torrelli Makes Soup by Sharon Creech. All Ross and Sullivan students are enjoying this read-aloud to start the year, and classes from each school are partnered with each other for activities. Mrs. Pennell's and Mrs. Chartouni's classes were interested in learning more about students with visual impairments, as one of the main characters in the book is visually impaired. Ms. Molly Dunne from our partner organization, NSSEO, joined the classes to share a presentation about learners with visual impairments and answer questions from our students.
