Panther Post

November 1, 2024

Dear Sullivan Families,

We have had a great start to the second quarter here at Sullivan! Our students have been busy in the classrooms, so please check out the classroom snapshots to see some of the great things going on at Sullivan.

November is gratitude month, and we are so grateful for our D23 community! We have a wonderful partnership with our parents, and we want to thank our room parents who hosted the Halloween Parties yesterday. The students really enjoyed the crafts and games! We appreciate the time you took to plan and volunteer to make the afternoon special for our kids.

If you have not already signed up for parent-teacher conferences, please do so using the link your child's teacher sent on 10/18. We value the home-school connection and these conferences are valuable opportunities to hear about your child's strengths and areas of growth in the classroom.

In this edition of the Panther Post, look for:

  • Halloween Pictures
  • iPad Collection - Thanksgiving Break
  • Nurse's Office Update
  • Sullivan Musical
  • Sullivan Snapshots
  • Pawsitive Panthers
  • Staff Spotlights
  • PTO Information

Have a great weekend and GO BEARS!

Sincerely,

Traci Meziere

Our students loved the Halloween Parade and the class parties yesterday! Thank you to our PTO room parents for planning the fun games and crafts for our students!

Sullivan Ambassador News

Our amazing Sullivan Ambassadors have been busy under the guidance of Ms. Ferber, Ms. Laboda, and Mrs. Curran! Last week, they walked to Sunrise Assisted Living to visit with the residents and Trick-or-Treat. They enjoyed some treats and conversations with members of our community.

Last Friday, they also planned and ran a wonderful school-wide assembly to unveil our school's One Word for the year - Inclusion! Our student leaders did an amazing job creating videos, writing scripts, and leading the assembly. We choose to include at Sullivan!

We are collecting items for our troops overseas! Please see the flier below for the items we are collecting. Students can bring items into school through November 13th!

Gold Medal Staff Nominations

Want to recognize a D23 staff member? Last year, we had staff members hitting home runs. This year, they are winning gold! Fill out the Form (HERE) to have a staff member be recognized. I know your positive feedback means a lot to our staff. Thanks for making us #PROUD2BD23! Also, watch X and Facebook for staff gold medal winners!

Sullivan Snapshots

Our 5th-grade students have been learning about place value, comparing decimals, and multiplying by powers of 10 in math this week. Our students love working with their classmates to solve problems and play math games.

Students also finished their latest writing project - National Park Postcards. Check out their great writing and artwork in the hallways during conferences on 11/7 and 11/14!

Mrs. Travis' IDEAS students learned about the election process during their civics unit over the past two weeks. They even had the chance to cast a ballot to choose a Halloween costume for Mrs. Travis' dog Murphy!

Our 4th-grade student "surgeons" enjoyed solving clues and dissecting texts as they learned about text features today.

Staff Spotlights

From the Nurse's Office

Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school. These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters. A few of the updates include:

  • Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.
  • Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.
  • All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent. This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.

Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

iPad Collection

Teachers will be collecting all student iPads before students leave for November Break. We are pushing out special wallpaper to students to prepare them for leaving their iPads. See below for the fun wallpaper our teachers and the Tech Department created together to make this fun for students!

Panther Expectations

Our core expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible are in place to ensure our Sullivan learning community is a wonderful place to grow each day. Our expectations posters are included below for you to look over. Please review these expectations with your children.
