Panther Post

February 15, 2024

Dear Sullivan Families,

It was a pleasure to talk with so many of you during our two evenings of Parent-Teacher Conferences. Our students and staff are excited and energized for the final trimester of the year! While conferences are an important opportunity to meet as a team face-to-face and discuss areas of strength and growth, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time to discuss your child's progress at Sullivan. We are grateful for the partnerships we have with our families!

Our staff would also like to give a huge shout-out to the PTO for sponsoring dinners on conference evenings, and for coordinating and planning our Valentine's Day parties. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Finally, please work with your child to make sure their iPads are updated. All students should be on OS 17.2. Although our tech team completed updates over winter break, Apple has come out with several updates over the past few weeks. The iPads need to be updated to the most current operating system in order to work with the apps we use for state testing, starting with ACCESS this week!

State Assessments

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. In our last newsletter, we focused on the State of Illinois's ACCESS Test for Multilingual Learners that is currently underway. Coming soon, students in grades 3-12 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is a statewide test in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year’s testing window is from March 4 to April 19. Your school will let you know of their chosen testing window within this timeframe as it approaches. An alternate version of the assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities as well.

In addition to this assessment, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in the State of Illinois are also required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures students progress in the area of science over time. Both the Illinois Assessment of Readiness in ELA and Mathematics and the Illinois Science Assessment are aligned with state standards in their subject areas.

Polar Plunge

MacArthur students are participating in the Polar Plunge on the afternoon of March 8th, and they have invited Sullivan students to join in on the fun! Students heard about the Polar Plunge on last week's announcements. Interested students will need to have a waiver completed no later than this Friday, February 24th, and will need to raise $100 to complete the challenge. Waivers are available by clicking the button below and will also be sent home via Seesaw. Once students have a signed waiver, we will help them set up their online fundraising page.

Sullivan Snapshots

Beauty and the Beast is almost here! The students in cast, crew, and set design have been hard at work under the direction of Mrs. Luehr, Ms. Wessel, Ms. Slowik, Mr. Anderson, and Mrs. Zavacki preparing for our student matinees on March 7th and our evening performance on March 8th! We can't wait to see our students shine!

Our Sullivan students had a blast celebrating Valentine's Day with their classmates! Thanks to our PTO parents for planning crafts and games for our kids
