Message From the Principal

Dear Sullivan Families,

We had a busy four-day week at Sullivan! Our students participated in the bus evacuation and fire safety drills, and completed beginning-of year testing. We are looking forward to getting back to our regular routine with a 5-day week!

Our new Ready Math program includes an iReady computerized component that provides individualized practice based on students' skill levels. The students took a math diagnostic test this week to allow the system to develop a learning path for each student. The iReady component will be integrated into classroom math instruction several times per week. Students also took the FAST (Formative Assessment System for Teachers) math and reading tests. The results of these adaptive tests allow teachers to provide targeted instruction for all students, as well as to monitor progress throughout the year. Students will take the tests in winter and spring as well.

We really are a community of readers at Sullivan. Great job to all students who participated in our 2019 Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge! The challenge officially ended today. As a school, we read 83,714 minutes. Way to go, Panthers!

Today was Mrs. Zawacki's last day at Sullivan. She was an integral part of our office and lunchroom for 19 years!
The students surprised her with signs in the lunchroom today. Best of luck on your new adventures!
Field Trip Permission Forms

Mrs. Yager is looking for volunteers to help in our library. Volunteers will help check out books, along with other fun tasks. If you have a few hours to spare, and you love books and interacting with kids, click here to sign up.

Book to Bridge Two Schools
We love our community of readers, and are excited about our Book to Bridge Two Schools book, Wishtree . All Ross and Sullivan students are reading the book as a class, and we have our very own Wishtree outside of the library where students and staff can leave their wishes for the school year.
Classroom Snapshots

Mrs. Stasi's and Ms. Funk's classes were excited to take a picture by our new Sullivan sign on the way in from bus evacuation this week.
Our 4th grade writers are working on narrative writing in literacy class. Students are in all stages of the writing process, and enjoy sharing their work with their peers!
Our 5th grade classrooms are all engaged in a 40 book challenge this year. The challenge charts are in the hallways to track progress. I sense some friendly competition among the classes!

Many of our students also participated in Book Tastings this week, where they sampled a variety of genres.

MacArthur Student Senate Fundraiser
The MacArthur Student Senate is holding a Lurie's Children Hospital Fundraiser in November. They are looking for donations for raffle baskets. Donations can be in the form or tickets, gift cards, or services. Please contact Athena Kalaras ( ) or Bryan Quesea ( ) with any questions or if you can help.

Raptor Visitor Management System
As you may recall, we piloted the Raptor System in the spring of last year. All visitors to the school will need a drivers license or photo ID in order to enter the school. Please read below or click here for a letter from Dr. Angelaccio with further details about the Raptor System and school safety.
