The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of La Crosse announces with great sadness the passing of longtime
fellowship member Liz Spangler on Thursday, November 1st, 2018.

Elizabeth Anne Spangler of Dresbach, MN was born in 1934 in Wauwatosa, WI to Evangeline Bartz and Joseph Cheney, at the age of one she was adopted by Anne and Barney Spangler of La Crosse, WI. Liz grew up in La Crosse watching her father build houses and her mother tend the garden and cherish her various collections. Liz graduated from Central High School and Macalester College and went on to teach Kindergarten in Minneapolis, Racine, La Crosse, and La Crescent. As an active member of the community Liz served on the board of the YWCA, as a volunteer for New Horizons and the pediatric cancer unit at Gundersen Health System. She loved teaching religious education at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of La Crosse and as foster parent for golden retrievers in the RAGOM program. Liz raised her three children on family land in Dresbach, MN with the Organic Gardening book from Rodale press as her guide. Liz was awarded as Conservation Farmer of the Year for Winona County in 1976 for tree planting. She was also awarded Gundersen Health System’s Volunteer of the Year and inducted in Macalester College’s Golden Scots Society. Liz spent 20 years as a Masters Swimmer and 25 years in the La Crosse Exercise and Health program. She loved volunteering, dogs, children, the color purple, and being on the farm.
She is preceded in death by both sets of parents and her brother Richard Spangler. She is survived by her three adopted children Anne, Jon, and Pam Hartwell and granddaughter Kamin Hartwell-Herrero; as well as siblings and cousins from various family ties.
Please join us for a service to celebrate her life on Monday, November 5th at 5:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 401 West Ave. South La Crosse, WI.
