Dear Holy Cross Academy Parents and Guardians,

Recently, Holy Cross Academy learned that we have been awarded a federal grant through the Payroll Protection Program. Thanks to the outstanding work of our business manager, Kathy Whetzel, and Fr. Mosimann, HCA was one of just fifteen schools/parishes in the Diocese to be approved for the program. This grant will ensure that our school can meet its goal of continuing to compensate all employees at their regular rate throughout this mandatory suspension of traditional operations. It is a blessing for our school in a difficult time for us all!

I have been asked by some parents if tuition would still be collected during the remainder of the school year. Holy Cross Academy is joining other schools in the Diocese by collecting tuition through the remaining months of the 2019-2020 school year. Tuition dollars and our subsidy from St. Mary’s Parish make up the vast majority of our school’s operating budget. Of that operating budget, over 80% of HCA’s is spent on faculty and staff salaries. Thankfully, the Payroll Protection Program can help meet potential shortfalls in revenue through the end of the school year.

To help ease the blow of this pandemic and accompanying quarantine, Holy Cross Academy is going to eliminate the $100 ($85 for pre-k) reenrollment fee for the 2020-2021 school year for all families. These payments had been previously delayed from April 1 to May 1. Now they will be eliminated. This represents a $45,000 loss in revenue for our school, but is the right thing to do to support families in these difficult times.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, our teachers have risen to the occasion to meet the needs of our students through distance education. Our faculty and staff are working hard to ensure the best possible learning outcomes for our students through the remaining trimester. Our teachers are continuing to evolve their distance education strategies for their students. Through Zoom calls, live Masses, posted videos, and regular communication, we are trying to keep our students feeling connected to their school through this quarantine.

If your family is economically impacted by the mandatory business shut downs in our region, please reach out to Kathy Whetzel, our business manager at kwhetzel@holycrossweb.com . We will work with families to delay payments and support families through this difficult time.  Our school community is a family and families take care of one another.

I’m proud of the way our school community has rallied together to make the best of a difficult situation. Thank you for all of the incredibly kind and supportive messages I have received in recent weeks. Please know you are all in my prayers.

All my best,

Stephen M. Fry, Ed. D.
