"We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions."

The 8th Principle – what is it?

Kathy Roche-Zujko will introduce an idea that has some support within the UU community: adding an 8th Principle to the seven faith principles that are currently the backbone of our religion. Attracting sentiment both for and against, the main issue is adopting a statement about dismantling racism and oppression, and working to build a diverse multicultural community, both within our UU denomination and in our society as a whole. But how to do this, the wording, the practice, the acceptance... this is the difficult part. Let's talk about it and look at this proposal from many angles.

SUUF SUMMER SERVICES

Summer is definitely here bringing a more relaxed version of our Sunday service. But do stay connected on zoom because we have a very interesting lineup of speakers and topics! Donna's journey to Honduras was just the beginning. Take a look below to see what's coming up. We'll round out the summer on Sept. 5 with a gathering back at our building, a "SUUF Social." Think party, celebration, sharing food and laughter with old friends...

July 18
Skagit Land Trust is a rare gem in this county, saving land in its natural form - from the Cascades to the Salish Sea. Laura Hartner is our speaker today, sharing the story of this wonderful organization and their mission "... of conserving wildlife habitat, agricultural and forest lands, scenic open space, wetlands, and shorelines for the benefit of our community and as a legacy for future generations."

July 25
We're featuring a dynamic speaker and UU minister from First Unitarian Church of Dallas, Rev. Aaron White. This recorded sermon is titled "God Is Not What You Think." Although it's from 2017, the message is both timeless and thought provoking. It has all the ingredients for a good discussion which will follow the viewing.

August 1
Let's PICNIC at Washington Park in Anacortes! Come prepared to do all those things you vaguely remember from past picnics (yes, we used to socialize): eat, snooze, gossip, people-watch and BE TOGETHER. We have a reserved, covered pavilion with a bbq grill; let's start at 11 am and end at your leisure. This is a potluck. Please bring a dish to share + chairs, sunscreen & anything else you need for a fun day at the shore.
Saturday, July 10th

JULY
by Henrietta Cordelia Ray

Sunshine and shadow play amid the trees
In bosky groves, while from the vivid sky
The sun’s gold arrows fleck the fields at noon,
Where weary cattle to their slumber hie.
How sweet the music of the purling rill,
Trickling adown the grassy hill!
While dreamy fancies come to give repose
When the first star of evening glows.

Henrietta Cordelia Ray was born in New York City in 1849. She authored two collections of poetry, Sonnets (Press of J. J. Little & Co., 1893), and Poems (The Grafton Press, 1910). In 1876, Ray’s poem “Lincoln” was read at the unveiling of the Emancipation Memorial in Washington, D.C. Ray died in 1917.

Do you remember Jesse Flaherty? She was so much fun, but unfortunately, she had to move across the country. However, sometime during the week of the 11th, she will stop here on her way to California and spend the night. She will be driving her live-in bus. We will meet her at the fellowship for a chance to enjoy some time with her before she continues her trip. If you want to join the fun, please email me and I will update you when I know more. Rosemary at [email protected]. Maybe we could have some food? What do you think? Let me know if you have some ideas for the reunion.
