Announcing WACA-AAD Engage America:
"State of State" Speaker Series
Applications Due by Friday, March 20
The World Affairs Councils of America is pleased to announce our renewed collaboration with the American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) on an Engage America : State of the State Department and Professional Diplomacy speaker series.

The American Academy of Diplomacy is a U.S. nonprofit institution dedicated to supporting and strengthening U.S. diplomacy and enhancing public appreciation of its critical role in advancing the national interest.
About the Program

For this project, WACA will arrange for decision makers and policy experts to discuss with Council audiences across the country why America needs a professional diplomacy. AAD will propose speakers from among its members , one per Council, for a speaking engagement to be hosted through mid-October 2020. Councils should include several preferred dates or date ranges in their proposals. Exact dates will be determined in collaboration with WACA and the American Academy of Diplomacy.

In addition to the main speaker event, Councils will organize at least one media engagement on the same subject , as well as a separate roundtable forum that aims to get at the substantive issues of:

  • How has Trump’s transactional diplomacy changed the public’s understanding of what is diplomacy and why it is important?

  • Who are U.S. allies and what is the importance of alliances and treaties

More specific topics for the roundtables will be refined at a later date through a collaborative effort between AAD, the local Council, and WACA. At the end of the event, the Councils agree to distribute to all event attendees a short online follow-up survey.

Four (4) Councils will be selected to participate in this Engage America series.

Costs and Stipends

WACA will provide 4 Councils with $2,000. Councils will use grant funds to cover venue, A/V, food & beverage, promotion, photography, and speaker costs (flights, transportation, and food during travel). Reimbursement will be made within 30 days of the submission of the Council's final program report to WACA.
