August 28 – September 29, 2024

Sacramento Premiere

2019 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Drama

At the Frasier household, preparations for Grandma’s birthday party are underway. Beverly is holding on to her sanity by a thread to make sure this party is perfect, but her sister can’t be bothered to help, her husband doesn’t seem to listen, her brother is MIA, her daughter is a teenager, and maybe nothing is what it seems in the first place! A standard family dramedy that takes a sharp, sly turn into a startling examination of deep-seated paradigms about race in America.

…dazzling and ruthless…one of the most exquisitely and systematically arranged ambushes of an unsuspecting audience in years…a glorious, scary reminder of the unmatched power of live theater to rattle, roil and shake us wide awake.

THE HEART SELLERS

by Lloyd Suh

October 16 – November 17, 2024

Northern California Premiere

Co-Production with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley & Aurora Theatre Company

Jane and Luna run into each other in the grocery store on Thanksgiving in 1973 and find they have much in common: each are recent Asian immigrants, a bit homesick and lonely with hardworking absentee husbands, and adjusting to a new country filled with new opportunities. Over sips of wine and a questionable frozen turkey, they dream of disco dancing, learning to drive, and even a visit to Disneyland, and share their hopes and challenges for making a new home in a new land with grace and dignity.

A stunning comedy…breathtaking. MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

It’s 2008, and four Iranians assemble triweekly in a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) class in Karaj, Iran. The students are led by Marjan, an anglophile who abolishes Farsi from her classroom. They translate Ricky Martin and endure major preposition confusion; they discover how to be funny in English and ponder what they will lose in the process. As the class slowly devolves into a linguistic mess, some students cling tighter to their mother tongue while others embrace the possibilities of a new language.

CRITIC'S PICK! “A rich new play... both contemplative and comic, it nails every opportunity for big laughs as its English-learning characters struggle with accents and idioms. But the laughter provides cover for the deeper idea that their struggle is not just linguistic.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

TO BE DETERMINED

March 19 – April 20, 2025

UNSEEN

by Mona Mansour

May 7 – June 8, 2025

Sacramento Premiere

Conflict photographer Mia wakes up in the Istanbul apartment of her on-again, off-again girlfriend after being found unconscious at the scene of a massacre she was photographing. Mia can’t even remember being there, but she wired photos of the site hours before she was found. The two women resume their volatile push-pull when Mia’s well-meaning Californian mother arrives from the US, trying to help unravel what happened to her daughter.

“Thought-provoking, challenging and complex. Those attributes alone make UNSEEN worth seeing, but it’s all that and more.”

ASHLAND NEWS

KING JAMES

by Rajiv Joseph

June 25 – July 27, 2025

Sacramento Premiere

“King” LeBron James’s years playing in Cleveland bring promise, prosperity, and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. His tenure also unites Shawn and Matt in an unlikely bond forged by fandom. Over twelve years, from LeBron’s rookie season to an NBA Championship, the men navigate their turbulent friendship through their shared love of basketball—and the endless amiable arguments that erupt from that love. A clever comedy, KING JAMES is an intimate exploration of the place that sports occupy in our lives and relationships.

Joseph has created one of the funniest and most moving plays about friendship in years… Basketball fans will love Joseph’s insidery jokes, but even if you don’t follow the game all that much, KING JAMES is a must-see. THEATERMANIA
