Like many events, Tacoma Pride is going to look different in 2020. The dual issues of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis have created a world of unknowns. Many businesses and activity centers have been closed or operating under severe restrictions. It remains unclear whether it will be safe to gather in groups of any significant size well into the summer. For all these reasons,
Rainbow Center will not hold a street festival to celebrate Tacoma Pride in 2020.
Instead we will facilitate a community full of Pride throughout the month of July and, specifically, on Saturday July 11th.
In place of a large gathering on Pacific Avenue Saturday July 11th, we will encourage folks to show their Pride by supporting organizations and businesses participating as
Points of Pride
. A Point of Pride can be any LGBTQ affirming business or organization committed to centering and celebrating the LGBTQ community on July 11
th
in their own unique way - a carryout sandwich or drink special, a window display, or a family friendly activity that allows distance.
We see 2020 Tacoma Pride as an opportunity for both LGBTQ visibility and to support local organizations and businesses.
Rainbow Center will provide registration information and more guidance about being a Point of Pride to organizations and businesses over the coming weeks.
The Tacoma Pride Festival will take place through the month of July. Look for smaller affiliated events as scheduled and when possible. These events may be scaled down or adjusted in some way. They offer the chance to support local organizations and business who need our support. Details will be provided at
www.tacomapride.org
, as they become available.
The City remains a strong partner in Pride and we will see a Pride month proclamation, as well as our flags flown above the Tacoma Dome and City Hall. We are planning for a smaller or virtual LGBTQ Community Awards ceremony.
We believe that 2020 Tacoma Pride can offer a chance to connect differently, to highlight how diversity builds strength, and to showcase resilience in action. Rainbow Center still wants to celebrate with you!
Take care,
