Dear Great Hearts Irving Families,
In March of this year, we shared the news that Mr. Philip Althage, founding administrator and Upper School Headmaster for the past four years, would be moving to West Virginia at the end of this school year. After an extensive search, I am delighted to announce that the next Headmaster of Great Hearts Irving Upper School will be Mr. Michael Cowan.
Mr. Cowan holds master’s degrees in English from Boston College and Notre Dame and has taught Literature for over a decade in both public and private schools to students in grades six through college. He comes to us most recently from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, an 8
grade all-boys private school where he served as curriculum lead for the English department. Prior to Brother Martin, Mr. Cowan was a Master Humane Letters Teacher and Senior Thesis Project Director during his five years with Great Hearts in Phoenix.
A graduate of the University of Dallas, Mr. Cowan has deep roots in Irving and is excited to be coming home. Michael met his wife, Maura, in Phoenix while they were teaching at separate Great Hearts academies. In July of 2019, they welcomed their first child, Andrew.
I am delighted that Mr. Cowan will be joining Great Hearts Irving to lead the Upper School. He brings a thoughtful, passionate commitment to the growth of students, culture, and community as well as to classical education and the liberal arts.
Mr. Cowan will be moving his family to Texas this summer but will begin collaborating with the Upper School leadership team next week when his duties at Brother Martin are concluded. Look for his letter to families late next week along with a short video greeting.
Please join us in welcoming the Cowans! Mr. Cowan does not have an official Great Hearts email yet, but the front desk will happily pass along any words of welcome.
