Upcoming Webinar: Professional Whistleblowers, Medical Necessity, and Compliance Implications - Laboratory Learnings from MD Lab's Qui Tam Victory

A recent court victory by MD Labs has become one of the industry's most closely watched cases, offering important insight into how courts may evaluate physician orders, laboratory responsibility, and allegations of medically unnecessary testing. While the ruling was favorable to MD Labs, it also reinforces an important reality: laboratories continue to play a critical role in documenting compliance and managing risk.

Join Lighthouse Lab Services on Wednesday, July 22, at 2:00 p.m. EDT, for a discussion featuring Matthew Rutledge, President of MD Labs, and Danielle Tangorre, Partner at Robinson+Cole and lead counsel in the litigation. Together, they'll examine the practical lessons laboratories can take from the case, including how to navigate audits and investigations, respond to allegations of medically unnecessary testing, and strengthen compliance programs for the future.

Who should attend: Laboratory owners, executives, regulatory consultants, compliance leaders, revenue cycle and billing leaders, and medical directors.

Lighthouse Lab Services Announces Jason Severtson as New Chief Executive Officer

We're excited to officially welcome Jason Severtson as our new Chief Executive Officer.

Jason brings more than 30 years of executive experience across healthcare, diagnostics, and life sciences, having held leadership roles with organizations including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Labcorp, Quest Diagnostics, Mayo Clinic, and GE Healthcare. Throughout his career, he has helped organizations accelerate growth, strengthen operations, and deliver exceptional patient experiences.

As Lighthouse continues to expand our laboratory consulting, management, and operational support services, Jason's experience scaling complex healthcare organizations positions us well for the future.

We also want to recognize and thank Mark Roth for his leadership, vision, and contributions to Lighthouse Lab Services as he transitions from his role as CEO. Mark will remain involved as a member of our Board of Directors, and we thank him for the lasting impact he has made on our team, clients, partners, and the laboratory community.

Our mission remains the same: helping laboratories start, run, and grow while making high-quality diagnostic testing more accessible.

Significant Changes Coming for New York Laboratory Director Qualifications

The New York State Department of Health's Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP) has announced major updates to its Certificate of Qualification process.

Here's what laboratory leaders should know:

  • No new Certificate of Qualification applications are currently being accepted. Applications submitted before June 24, 2026, will continue to be processed while CLEP prepares the new application process.

  • A new Laboratory Director Certificate of Qualification will be required, along with a new application and $150 application fee, once the updated process becomes available.

  • Current certificate holders should pay close attention to their expiration dates. Those renewing between July and September 2026 will need to reapply under the new process, while directors whose certificates expire later will transition at renewal if they meet the updated eligibility requirements.

  • Laboratories should begin reviewing leadership qualifications now. Individuals who do not meet the new Laboratory Director requirements will not be eligible for the new certificate, meaning affected laboratories will need to designate a qualified Laboratory Director by January 2027.

Regulatory transitions like this can create unexpected staffing and compliance challenges. Now is a good time for New York laboratories to review succession plans, verify director eligibility, and prepare for the upcoming application process.

10 Key Quality Indicators Every Laboratory Should Track

Too often, quality management programs become overloaded with metrics that generate reports but provide little operational value. Teams spend time collecting data without gaining meaningful insight into laboratory performance, compliance risk, or patient impact.

During inspections, this becomes apparent quickly. Surveyors frequently ask why specific indicators are being tracked and how the laboratory uses that information to improve performance. When leaders struggle to answer those questions, it often signals that quality monitoring has become a compliance exercise rather than a management tool.

RCM NEWS & UPDATES

On-Demand Webinar: From FDA Review to Payment

The biggest reimbursement mistake many laboratories make happens long before they submit their first claim. The decisions made during test development, from validation strategy to regulatory planning, can influence payer coverage, medical-necessity reviews, and ultimately whether innovative testing achieves commercial success.

During a June 2026 webinar, we welcomed regulatory attorney Christine Bump for an in-depth discussion with Lighthouse's Ann Lambrix on the growing connection between FDA oversight and laboratory reimbursement.

Whether you're developing new diagnostic testing, expanding molecular capabilities, or navigating today's increasingly complex payer environment, this discussion offers valuable insights to help your laboratory prepare for what's ahead.

DEEP DIVE: The Biggest Mistake Clinical Laboratories Make

Biggest mistake clinical labs can make
Jon Harol, Founder, LLS 2026

Insights from Jon Harol, Founder, Lighthouse Lab Services

For more than two decades, I've worked alongside clinical laboratories of every size, from physician office laboratories and hospital systems to independent reference laboratories and startups introducing innovative diagnostics.

During that time, I've noticed one misconception that quietly shapes nearly all commercial decisions laboratories make. Ask a laboratory executive, "Who is your customer?" and the answer is almost always the same: "The physician."

Physicians are essential partners. But they're usually not the customer. The customer is the entity that pays the invoice, and in most cases, that's Medicare, Medicaid, a commercial insurance company, a self-funded employer, or another payer.
