Fuel for the Future

National Nutrition Month® has been celebrated each March for more than 50 years! The theme for 2023 is "Fuel for the Future." Eating with sustainability in mind is a tasty way to nourish ourselves during every phase of life and protect the environment. Check out Smart Tips for Successful Meals, and visit the EatRight.org website for more Nutrition Month tip sheets.

Helping Families Eat Well on a Budget

United General WIC encourages parents and young kids to eat a variety of foods that power bodies and minds. With a Registered Dietician on staff, we help families with practical meal and snack ideas that work on a budget and with their lives. For example, when fresh fruits and veggies are not in season they cost more, which means frozen, dried, and canned options can help keep costs down without sacrificing flavor or nutrition! We love Chop-Chop Family for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snack ideas using frozen food including this broccoli soup with cheddar cheese.

Spotlight Film Festival Coming to the Lincoln Theatre

The Children's Council will present a series of four compelling documentaries that shine a light on important topics in our community. Join us at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon on May 1, 8, 15, & 22 for films covering a range of issues, including bullying, the struggles of parents caring for children who are disabled or medically complex, early childhood education, and challenges to the civil rights of transgender youth. All showings are followed by a facilitated discussion and offer K-12 education clock credits. Some offer Early Childhood Education STARS credits.

Entrance is free with a suggested donation of $5. Visit the Skagit Spotlight Film Festival website for details.

Students as Teachers

Nine high school students from Mount Baker and Oak Harbor High Schools attended a Peer 2 Peer training in February to become certified peer educators. Peer 2 Peer training equips students with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to discuss topics surrounding substance use prevention and overall resilience with their younger peers. On March 21, middle school students from around the five-county North Sound region participated in a similar training!

Why we use a Peer-based Approach

Peer-based programs are increasingly used throughout the world as a health promotion strategy to reach young people on health and social related issues. These initiatives are based on the idea that young people tend to discuss personal issues with their peers rather than with parents or adults and on the basis that peers are often regarded as a more credible and non-judgmental source of information. By formalizing and centering conversations among peers around health-promoting and risk-reducing actions, programs help to empower youth to attain healthy lifestyles.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Mark your calendar! Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up on Saturday, April 22. Don’t want to wait? Check out year-round locations for safe disposal of medications throughout Skagit at the all-new Med Takeback Washington website.

Trek for Treasure 2023 Theme Announced

Every Trek for Treasure year is different -- new hikes, new t-shirts, and a new theme to fuel the adventure. This year’s theme centers around the true story of the infamous D.B. Cooper, a hijacker who evaded authorities with a ransom of $200,000 after jumping out of a plane in 1971. Help us by hiking local trails in search of clues to reveal the mysteries of D.B. Cooper, and the fate that befell him.*

Check out the Trek for Treasure website for the full story and calendar of events.

*Note: Although the story of D.B. Cooper is true, the clues and evidence provided are fictional and meant for entertainment purposes only.

Registration opens April 3rd!
