The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) next year will be working with PCSS on a new initiative to expand buprenorphine induction in rural communities, particularly the native American community.
A key component of this effort is PACED (Pain and Addiction Care in the ED), an ACEP-governed accreditation program, which provides a national accreditation body for emergency department (ED) pain and addiction programs. The goal of the PCSS program is to accredit 10 Indian Health Service emergency departments in the next year.
PACED aims to recognize evidence-based practices in emergency department pain/addiction care and provide facilities with a standardized approach for the treatment of both populations. Pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek emergency care and makes up a large portion of the referrals to the emergency department. Additionally, addiction treatment options may be limited or hard to navigate within the community. A PACED ED can provide at least basic if not advanced evidence-based addiction care 24/7.
The PCSS Newsletter will have more on this program as it evolves, so stay tuned!
