Balcones Woods Family Medicine
Proudly Announces Our Sister Company
~ Resilient Health ~
Announcing our 2nd Location!
and Resilient Health Program begins
announcement
July has been an exciting month for Balcones Woods Family Medicine! We have opened a second location, and we have begun a new optional program called Resilient Health.

Our Second Location: We are proud to announce that we have opened our second location in the One Far West Building at the corner of Far West and Mopac. This second office will be the primary location of Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen and Dr. Lara Hochman.

Dr. Hochman will physically see all of her patients at our Far West Resilient Health location (3410 Far West Blvd, Suite 100 - Austin 78731). Dr. Hochman will still see all of her patients under the Balcones Woods Family Medicine model and is not a part of the Resilient Health program.

Dr. Hausman-Cohen will be primarily at Resilient Health. She remains the owner and medical director of both practices, and is dedicated to being a resource for all of our physicians and nurse practitioners. She will continue to be integrally involved in the ongoing training of our BWFM providers, so that they can continue to offer an integrative approach within the constraints of our BWFM framework.

Our New Program: Additionally, Dr. Hausman-Cohen is now offering a new practice option called Resilient Health. Resilient Health membership offers consult-length appointments that are 60-90 minutes each, as well as even greater individualized research and customized nutritional counseling, combined with concierge and private physician options. Resilient Health was co-founded by Dr. Hausman-Cohen and Carol Bilich, RMT.

Our Balcones Woods Family Medicine model is thriving, and will continue to meet the needs of most of our patients. Our Resilient Health program is simply an additional optional offering for those that are interested in these types of services.

If you are interested in learning more about our Resilient Health program options, please contact us at ResilientHealthAustin@gmail.com or call Meagan or Connie at 512.231.1901. We will also have a Q&A about Resilient Health at the time of Dr. Hausman-Cohen's upcoming talk on August 16th. Read on for further details!

What is Resilient Health?RHinfo
Resilient Health was created in response to patient requests for even more time and personalized attention. This allows us to dive deeper into personal health and wellness goals, including the latest in integrative/alternative medicine. Our Resilient Health model lets Dr. Hausman-Cohen spend even more time with patients than our Balcones Woods model allows. It will enable her to make a firm commitment to her patients - to be there to meet their medical needs, both big and small.

During the past five years, Dr. Hausman-Cohen has dramatically expanded her integrative medicine knowledge with thousands of hours of independent and formal studying. She has achieved both the distinction of fellow of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and has completed the formal board certification in Integrative Medicine through the American Board of Specialties.*

Dr. Hausman-Cohen's switch to this concierge/private physician model will take place slowly throughout 2016. For more details about this new program, please click here for our  Resilient Health Brochure .

If you are interested in a membership but aren't sure if Resilient Health is right for you, consider scheduling a "new patient integrative consult." At this 90-minute initial consult, Dr. Hausman-Cohen will take a complete medical history with a targeted physical exam, listen to your symptoms and concerns, and begin to delineate a plan for further evaluation and treatment. She will provide you with detailed notes and recommendations. The fee for this service is $275, plus your insurance copay or deductible. If you choose to continue to work with Dr. Hausman-Cohen as a Resilient Health patient, the $275 fee will be credited towards your Resilient Health plan. This option is open to new patients. Established patients who have not had an office visit with Dr. Hausman-Cohen since 2015 can also request a new patient consult.

(*Texas does not recognize this board certification)

Upcoming Public Lecture:
Prevention & Reversal of Alzheimer's + Q&A on Resilient Health
talksRH

Please join us at our free  upcoming community lecture. You do not have to be a patient to attend, so you are welcome to bring friends or family along!

Prevention and Reversal of Alzheimer's
by Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen

Memory loss, previously thought to be irreversible, has now been shown to be a treatable condition. Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen has been studying with world-renowned neurologist Dr. Dale Bredesen. Dr. Hausman-Cohen is currently the only physician trained in the Bredesen protocol in Texas and one of only 60 physicians trained on this protocol in the world. See www.mpicognition.com for more on Dr. Bredesen's work. It is never too early to learn how to preserve and repair the brain.

After each program Dr. Hausman-Cohen will also do a Q&A on Resilient Health. This is a wonderful opportunity to answer any questions you may have about our new practice model, so we hope that you can join us!

We are excited to introduce our Thor Laser and LED Therapy System! Red and near infrared or "cold" lasers and light emitting diodes (LEDs) have a wide range of amazing healing powers with exciting scientific research backing their use. Some of the most well-studied fields for Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) include pain relief, tissue repair, and inflammation reduction.

There are over 200 double-blind placebo controlled studies using LLLT for chronic pain conditions ranging from neck pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica, and more. It has also been proven to be excellent for decreasing post surgical pain and swelling, and improving fracture and other healing time. Further, it has been shown to help in a wide variety of non-pain conditions including, but not limited to, post concussions/closed head injuries, preventing radiation therapy induced skin changes (during breast cancer radiation therapy treatments or other radiation therapy), and many more conditions.

For those of you who want a bit more of the science behind this type of therapy,

Laser treatments will be available to both Resilient Health and Balcones Woods Family Medicine patients at our new Resilient Health location. One of our providers will need to evaluate you to order LLLT. Treatments take 15-30 minutes each, depending on the area being treated and type of pain.

While LLLT is not currently covered by insurance, we have priced our treatments to be affordable. Depending on the length of the protocol, laser treatments will range from
$35-$75.  Most protocols require 3-6 sessions for acute/short-term issues. For more longstanding chronic problems, 6-12 sessions are typically required twice weekly.  For more complicated protocols, a physician may be present during the initial laser consult/ treatment and then a copay/deductible will also apply. The estimated length of protocol can be given at the time of scheduling or from your BWFM provider.

Partial list of treatment protocols:
Tendonitis, strains, frozen shoulder and other musculoskeletal issues
Acute Traumatic Brain Injury (or Post Stroke)
Arthritis pain (Neck, spine, knee, other)
Nerve issues: Bell's Palsy, Carpal Tunnel, neuromas, shingles
Fracture healing
Fungal infections (fungal nails or other)
Headaches/ migraines
Lymphedema
Post-Operative pain, swelling and healing (breast surgery, C-section, knees, hips, and more)
Prevention of radiation dermatitis (from radiation therapy)
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Wound healing
Customized protocols can also be created on a case-by-case basis.

Our laser is state-of-the-art and being used in research at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, NASA, and other well-respected hospitals in Israel and England. Other groups using the Thor laser include the US Army and Navy, the Royal Navy in England, as well as a wide variety professional sports teams and Olympic athlete training programs. Y ou can see why we are so excited to be offering this treatment to you!  In fact, we have such a great laser that UT's neuropsychology research department is borrowing our space to help conduct some of their landmark research on LLLT for depression, anxiety and cognition.

For more information on LLLT, feel free to call and schedule an appointment with any of our providers at BWFM or RH for an evaluation.

We're so happy to announce that we now have check-in iPads at both locations! These tools help ensure that we have updated health and demographic information, and replace the timely and cumbersome paperwork that our patients had to complete in the past. Our patients have been very happy with the new system!
