Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.  You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.  The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs. We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

We're sad to announce that Understory Farm will be shutting down as of mid-August. We have really enjoyed being a member of the Durham Farmers' Market and appreciate all of the support from our devoted customers. We'll miss the camaraderie of our fellow vendors, the devotion of the market staff and volunteers, and the inspired fungal delicacies of the chefs we've been fortunate to work with. As farmers market patrons ourselves we look forward to seeing all of you at market on into the future, just from the other side of the table.

Terra Clotha
We have been experimenting with glow-in-the-dark silkscreen ink recently. Now mostly it's on children's clothes, but we'll have it for adults soon. While the glow from this ink is likely not bright enough so you can use it to read a newspaper, it may help you locate your children when the power goes out. Non-toxic. Machine washable, and 100 percent fun.

Clothing from Terra Clotha. Gives wearers a warm glow.

Like our Facebook page and while you're there, find a 10 percent off coupon to use with your next Terra Clotha purchase.

The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.

Our current offerings are: green cabbage, napa cabbage, radish, kohlrabi and carrot, and a limited selection of collard greens. Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces.

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This Mead Day we'll be celebrating with some special events at the meadery - Saturday 8/4 from 1-6 pm! Come out to the tasting room for some special tastings, prizes, guest vendors and fun! Check out our Facebook page for more details!

This week we will be sampling: our BRAND NEW Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick. Fermented with NC strawberries, wildflower honey and infused with habanero peppers to bring a little heat.

And we will also be sampling our Apple Cyser Mead , this is the mead version of a hard cider, and ours is a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights. A blend of four apple varieties from western NC contributes both tart and sweet cider notes.

We will also have bottles available of our Lavender Mead , an infusion of fresh-dried local lavender flowers in our orange blossom traditional mead; and Strawberry Mead , made with local strawberries and NC wildflower honey.

Hello Farmers' Marketeers!  This week has been an interesting demonstration of the futility of prognostication.  Every day so far they've called for rain and we haven't seen much at all.  Every night we get drenched.  This is, in my view, a perfect chance to practice an important farming skill; that would be flexibility.  In this day and age we have an ever increasing number of wonderful tools that allow us to impose our expectations and desires upon the world.  Free two day shipping can get us almost anything we want when we want it with the illusion of no cost.  Mother nature however, does not know or care what a farmer wants or expects, and the vicissitudes of weather simply are what they are.  So the farmer must be flexible.  We must work with what is, and not dwell on dashed expectations when there's work to do.  Some folks are more inclined to this practice than others, but it is a skill that can be honed.  So in spite of a week of dashed expectations, or perhaps because of them, we will be bringing cilantro, dill, parsley, chives, basil, shiso, tulsi, lemongrass, sunflower, tuberoses,  handmade teas, herb infused vinegars,  green peppers, sweet peppers, lettuce, arugula, pea shoots, salad mix, eggplant, potatoes, onions, and heirloom, red slicing, roma, and sungold tomatoes to market this week.  We hope to see you there!

We will bring apples, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, okra, peppers, eggplant, squash, zucchini, fresh and dried herbs, and zinnias. We also have a freezer full of USDA inspected Angus beef. If you have a special cut you want us to bring, please e-mail or call. We will bring a large selection to market.

Melina's Fresh Pasta
We will be at market  this Saturday  with a variety of fresh pasta! We will have everyone's favorite ravioli, including NEW Greek Ravioli (made with spinach, feta, lemon zest, and green onion), and two flavors of Pierogi. Our eggplant-based Caponata Sauce is also back for a limited time! Or pick up one of our take-and-bake lasagnas for an easy and delicious meal.

Hurtgen Meadows Farm
REFRESH YOUR HERBS!
Hurtgen Meadows Farm will be bringing basil starts to refresh your summer garden for the fall. We'll also have large potted herbs including rosemary, thyme, chives, oregano and lemon balm (natural mosquito repellent). Plant these perennials now for use throughout the upcoming months.

PRODUCE
We will be bringing cabbage, potatoes, a large variety of cherry and slicing tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, eggplant (classic and fairy tale), sweet onions, and garlic.

FLOWERS
We will have bunches of mixed summer flowers and limelight hydrangeas by the stem.

JAMS & JELLIES
Current varieties available include peach, peach mango, kiwi, strawberry, sweet onion and pepper jam. Our award winning jams and jellies are made in small batches using local ingredients. Our family has made jams for multiple generations and we are happy to share with our customers.

All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm.

Chapel Hill Creamery
We're excited to announce that we won 2 ribbons at the American Cheese Society Competition. Our Dairyland Farmers won first in its category and Hickory Grove won a third in its category. The ACS Conference was in Pittsburgh last weekend and our lead cheesemaker Brian Goodale was able to go with a scholarship. The competition is open to cheese makers in the US and Canada with over 1,900 entries, and Brian got some well-deserved recognition.

We have Fresh Mozzarella this week to enjoy while tomatoes are still wonderful. Use it fresh in Caprese Salad or melt it in eggplant dishes, pizza, or zucchini pasta. Our Fresh Mozzarella is milky and rich, made with milk from our Animal Welfare Approved Jersey cow herd. The yellow color comes from the carotene in the grass our cows graze. You'll find it at Pizza Toro this time of year on one of their pizzas.

We also have Hickory Grove, fresh Dairyland Farmers, Carolina Moon, Danziger, and our seven month old Calvander. Use Hickory Grove for snacking, melting on burgers, or in omelets. It is a washed rind cheese that is buttery and savory. Fresh Dairyland Farmers is a favorite on tomato sandwiches or adding to Mexican dishes. We have smooth and creamy Carolina Moon and Danziger. Carolina Moon is like a Camembert and Danziger is a washed rind cheese so it has a slightly stronger flavor. Calvander is based on an Asiago, good for snacking, pasta, and homemade pesto.

Enjoy BLTs with our Molasses Cured Bacon or Jowl. Cook these on a slightly low flame so that the molasses doesn't scorch and enjoy a treat for dinner. Add to tacos or shrimp and grits.  Cured Pork Jowl is at an introductory price of $6.00 per pound . We have ground pork and a few Spare Ribs.  Sausages include Mild Italian, Smoked Andouille, Sage and Maple Breakfast Links, and Mild Country Breakfast.  All our pork is from our pigs on our farm who drink the nutritious whey from cheese making. Don't forget your cooler and come see us!

This week I am featuring passion flowers which bloom in July. These exotic flowers look like they arrived from another planet! They can be found growing on vines in ditches in our area. Duke Gardens also has some in the White Garden and climbing porch posts.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Many of my photos can be previewed on my Smugmug website I will also have enlargements in 11x14" and 16x20" sizes and can make posters upon request. Drop by for a look and a chat!

Stop by and visit with Jack and select some delicious bison meat for weeknight family dinners or for gatherings with family and friends on the weekend.  Sandy made a quick and delicious bison dinner this past week using her Christmas gift, "The Spiralizer". Instead of noodles she created Zoodles with fresh zucchini. She boiled the zoodles for 2 minutes, drained and covered them with bison spaghetti sauce she made using Prego sauce with mushroom and ground bison. Quick and easy.

Soul   Cocina  is a combination of eco-friendly philosophy and cutting-edge, dynamic approach to plant-based cuisine. We draw inspiration from Latin-American traditions and the availability of locally grown produce to create imaginative concepts.

We offer delicious tamales made the artisan way: with love, care and attention to detail. To ensure we respect tradition, we source wholesome ingredients before steaming them in banana leaves, creating a flavorsome and aromatic product. We pride ourselves on taste and quality, and it won't go unnoticed. Every bite you take will give you a taste of the rich Colombian heritage our tamales are built on.

We will also have soups and pasteles de yuca: delicious roasted yuca pockets filled with red lentils, brown rice and spinach. A handheld food very similar to empanadas, only gluten-free and made with wholesome ingredients!
