The 2020 Golden Apple recipients represent providers from a diversity of health specialties including dermatology, nursing, hematology, wound care, physical therapy and mental health. Their work has led to education, training and professional opportunity for health workers around the world, including Cambodia, Bhutan, Peru, Rwanda and Vietnam.
The efforts of
HVO
Golden Apple Award
recipients are an integral part of HVO’s mission to strengthen the global health workforce, expand access to care, and ensure we strengthen health systems. Their contributions include project assessment, development, and monitoring; advocacy and promotion of HVO’s mission; building professional networks that support health workers and facilitate advancements at project sites; cultivation of connections between HVO volunteers and overseas trainees; acquisition and development of educational resources; and teaching, training, and mentoring overseas health workers to expand their knowledge, skills and professional development.
“HVO’s work is grounded in the relationships we have developed over the years. The 2020 HVO Golden Apple honorees represent the breadth and depth of this work,” added Ms. Kelly. “In this interconnected world, the community that HVO volunteers and partners foster will help see us through these challenging times and ensure we can continue toward our vision of a world where all people have access to high quality health care delivered by local health professionals.”
By highlighting the achievements and contributions of the
Golden Apple Award
recipients, HVO seeks to demonstrate the ways in which education and opportunity for health workers can strengthen health systems and expand their capacity to deliver safe, skilled, and compassionate health care when it is most needed.
The HVO Board of Directors established the
HVO Golden Apple Award
in 2006 to recognize and thank the individuals and health educators who make exceptional contributions to HVO and our mission to improve global health. Each year, a handful of individuals - nominated by HVO members, volunteers or leadership, or by our overseas partners - receive the award in recognition of the substantial impact they have had as teachers, advisers, mentors and leaders.
Since 1950, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the international community have celebrated World Health Day on April 7. The day always focuses on a relevant global health issue and this year’s theme - in recognition of 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife - is a clear call to action: “Support nurses and midwives.” World Health Day will highlight the current status of nursing and midwifery around the world, and call for support that will ensure that the nursing and midwifery workforces are strong enough to ensure that everyone, everywhere gets the health care they need. World Health Worker Week, celebrated for the seventh consecutive year, runs from April 5-11. The week serves as an opportunity to mobilize communities, partners, and policy makers in support of health workers around the world. Now, more than ever, health workers need us to acknowledge the amazing work and potential of health workers, raise awareness of the challenges they face, and address the gaps in the health workforce by ensuring that health workers have the training, supplies, and support they need to do their jobs effectively.

About Health Volunteers Overseas
|
|
Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve global health through education of the local health workforce in resource-scarce countries.
HVO fosters partnerships between institutions, local providers, volunteers and sponsor organizations, so that, together, we can address the global health workforce shortage. HVO recruits trained physicians, nurses, dentists, and allied health professionals to support their colleagues overseas through education, mentorship and inter-professional collaboration. Our volunteers train the next generation of providers while mentoring and working alongside those already in practice to support and sustain them in their work.
We invest in health workers, helping to build health system resilience and capacity to ensure all people will have access to high quality health care delivered by local health professionals.
