The Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) are awarding $236,963 in conservation treatment grants to 35 organizations in 25 New York State counties. Conservation Treatment Grants fund professional conservation to stabilize and preserve objects and works of art in New York museums, history centers, and cultural organizations.
Generous support has also been provided by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for conservation treatment projects in Nassau & Suffolk counties and New York City; and the Coby Foundation for textile conservation treatment projects.
Over the past two years, the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grants guidelines were revised to make funding more accessible for projects that reflect the spectrum of communities and cultures across New York State. Supported projects include conservation of a lacquered wood statue of a 24-arm Avalokiteshvara at the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art; a silk and cotton textile of the Charlotte Fire Department “Firemen’s Parade Banner” from 1911 at The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society; Setalcott indigenous regalia from the mid-20th century at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages; a decorative French handmade “Southworth homestead French Scenic Wallpaper” panel from the early 1800s at Dryden Town Historical Society; and a shop awning fragment with Painted valence from the Mee Heung Chow Main Company at the Museum of Chinese in America. A full list of recipients can be found below.
“The field of conservation is continually changing,” noted GHHN Executive Director Priscilla Brendler. “It requires practitioners who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency and advanced knowledge, adherence to the ethics and standards of the American Institute of Conservation (AIC), and who are recognized for their expertise in the museum field. We are pleased these awards will involve 20 individual conservators and 4 conservation labs to conserve New York State's irreplaceable cultural treasures.”
NYSCA Executive Director Erika Mallin said, “These compelling projects offer us a window into our rich creative heritage. NYSCA is proud that this funding is more accessible to organizations that reflect the diverse cultural traditions of New York State and we congratulate all the grantees on this vital work. Thank you for your dedication to preserving and celebrating New York’s art and culture.”
This year, 41 grant applications were received at GHHN from institutions in 25 counties in New York State, requesting an aggregate of $337,330 in grant support. In all, requests were made for the treatment of 89 objects, of which 35 organizational awards totaling $236,963 were recommended by a peer panel of conservators, curators, and museum professionals. Of the 35 organizations that received funding, only one received partial funding; the rest received the full funding requested. 2025 Conservation Treatment Grant awards range from $2,889 to the maximum amount of $7,500. Of the 41 applicant institutions, 7 had budgets under $99,000, 10 had budgets between $100,000 and $300,000, 8 had budgets between $300,001 and $1 million, 9 had budgets between $1 million and $5 million, and 7 institutions had budgets over $5 million. Organizational operating budgets for 2025 grant applicants range from $6,400 to $37 million.
