This is a first in a while to have the SGMC with us in Solano County, and we can't wait to hear them! Some of us heard them at a concert at UC Davis last year with their joint choirs singing a special group of music written to support the Laramie Project.

We are pleased to have "The Freeze32°F" playing at Suisun Pride again for the second year in a row! You will remember them for all of the classics they play, but will hear some new music as well. Miss Alleta Nash of Benicia joined the band as lead vocalist (shades of Janis Joplin mixed with SIA), adding spicy harmonies, and our newest addition to the line up, bass man Roberto Orozco, brings a fresh perspective to our rhythm section with some hot bass action.

We are also pleased to have School of Rock Vacaville's own "Glass Cactus" closing the day out at Suisun Pride again! This youth band has performed at Suisun Pride, Pride in the Park at Andrew's Park in Vacaville, and multiple other community events around the county and beyond. We are in the midst of putting together another Pre-Pride Drag Show at Lucy's Bar & Lounge across the street from where we will celebrate Pride the next day! Amelia Need Moore is organizing the Drag for the night, and Eli, the new owner of Lucy's has promised to keep the drinks flowing!

We heard of families and friend groups coming to Suisun Pride by Train, Ferry or driving to make it a weekend the last couple of years. You can walk to a hotel from the Capitol Corridor Amtrak train! You can grab a Lyft from the Vallejo Ferry to Suisun, and party all weekend! Lots to do, wine to drink, and play to have! We hope to have shuttles for parking to announce soon as well! Stephan's Corner
Dear Solano Pride Community,
Check on your friends. As the rights of our community are debated across Governor races and in many assemblies in states across the country, I wonder how we are all doing? Many of us have been through a lifetime of this. Erasure removes those fights, protests, riots, trials and tribulations of the diversity within gender and sexual orientation in humanity, leaving many of us unfamiliar, scared and alone.
So whether youthful lack of familiarity or seasoned in the pendulum swings of civil rights in the United States, either way the fear and uncertainty of the future can lead to isolation, which is not good for our collective mental well being.
Sometimes asking for help can be really hard. Many of us have had to grow up alone and our independence provides a sense of identity and achievement, so when we do help we’re afraid to ask. Sometimes when we stay away too long, we can be afraid it won’t feel the same or people will ask too many questions or be angry with us for being gone.
So please reach out to your friends. Boundaries are good and definitely honor them, and don’t forget to stop checking and inviting.
Solano Pride Center has many social and therapeutic gatherings to help in this endeavor. We look forward to seeing you, for the first time or again.

Our counselors have special training and skills in treating a vast number of issues. Their training in treating trauma, depression, anxiety, and grief has been especially helpful as we've navigated the ever-changing and uncertain path of our times. We are fortunate to have counselors with LGBTQIA2S+ cultural competency, so you know they will have heard about your uniqueness just by stepping through our doors! You can sign up for free counseling by calling our confidential Counseling line at 707.389.4520.
There are openings available for those who wish to be seen for counseling services right now! We can even talk to you if you just want to make sense of the times we live in. We are able to see clients for up to six months at no cost to clients, helping you make sense of life as a queer person, get support coming out, or deepening your self confidence by talking about your past. Please call our confidential line to make an appointment at: 707-389-4520.
In addition Solano Pride Center is accepting application from Interns and Student Counseling Trainees needing practicum sites who are interested in providing therapy to the LGBTQ+ community. Please contact our Clinical Director Colin Amato at colin@solanopride.org for more info.

THE TRANSFORMATION STATION.
This is a place where our Trans/Non-binary folks can come in and pick out any articles of clothing that they need. They will choose from our community's donations.
We are heading into Fall which means it just might be getting a bit chilly....or....you might be looking for a job and making the rounds of interviews....or if you just want to look F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S, we've got your back!
Right now, we are not asking for more donations.

A free, supportive environment for self-expression and building community.
What is Drama Therapy?
Drama Therapy is a chance to connect with others and explore emotions, identity, and social interactions through the use of theatrical techniques.
Who can participate?
This group is designed for the LGBTQ+ community. It is open to actors and non-actors alike. No prior theater experience is required.
When and where is the group?
We will meet at the Solano Pride Center conference room at 1234 Empire Street in Fairfield, Thursdays.

Coping with Loss and Grief.
Grief has no set boundaries. Grief comes in many different avenues such as losing a spouse, parents, a sibling, your pet, the loss of a friend or a friendship, even the loss of a job can cause us to grieve.
This new group will continue Friday, May 8th from 10 - 11:30 am on zoom. The next gathering would be May 22nd, also online.
The way in which we cope with the loss is the way in which we begin to heal and move forward with our lives no matter the depth of pain and sorrow we are in. One way and there are many depending on how one copes with the loss is to talk about what we are feeling, what we are going through and share those feelings and thoughts with others who may be experiencing the same just as you are. The QR code: Queer Recovery
A secular 12-step LGBTQ+ group for those in recovery for any addictions. The next meeting will be Sunday, May 10th at 7 pm. The group will meet in person at the Solano Pride Center’s Conference Room on every Sunday evening now, at 7 pm. Come to the main doors near our offices and knock to be let in. Hosted by Christopher Cortes (christopher@solanopride.org) with shared leadership from other members of the group. Anonymity will be protected. The Gender Expansive Circle will meet again on Friday, May 15th at 5:30 pm at our GEC where we will hear a presentation from Ms. Bob, founder of the Louis Lawrence Transgender Archive.

There will be time to see the Transformation Station and Library. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our trans, enby, and gender nonconforming history. Our last Red Cross Blood Drive was a huge success!
Since May 11, 2023, the restrictions on the LGBTQIA+ community for donating blood were dropped.
This means that we can now donate blood and save a life.
Solano Pride center have been doing their part by partnering with the American Red Cross to serve this community with a blood drive.
We have already facilitated 2 blood drives. Thank you to those who have come out to donate! You are saving lives! Now, we need your help in ensuring that these blood drives can continue! We need at least 35 donors to be able to do this! 35 people that will come in and donate. Please join us for our next blood drive and SAVE LIVES! May also brings us outdoors, and we’re thrilled to highlight the Vallejo Garden Tour, a wonderful opportunity to experience creativity in full bloom. Gardens have long been places of resilience, expression, and growth—values that resonate deeply with our community. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply enjoy soaking up beauty and fresh air, this event is a lovely way to connect with neighbors and support local spaces that make Vallejo shine.

Our Senior Social takes place once a month on the second Wednesday, from 8:30 to 10:30 AM. The Benicia Public Library invites the community to a special Pride Month screening of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on Tuesday, June 30.
This iconic, high-energy film follows two drag performers and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian outback in a lavender bus, celebrating friendship, identity, and self-expression along the way. Known for its unforgettable costumes, humor, and heart, the film has become a beloved classic and a meaningful part of LGBTQ+ cultural history. The screening is rated R, and attendees under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
In the spirit of the film, costumes are highly encouraged, and prizes will be awarded for the best looks of the evening. Guests are invited to come dressed to impress and celebrate Pride in style. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a favorite LGBTQ+ book title to swap, creating an opportunity to share stories and discover new reads within the community.

For four decades, our community has come together to walk in solidarity, remembrance, and hope. Since our very first steps in 1987, AIDS Walk San Francisco has raised critical funds for HIV prevention, care, and support services across the Bay Area. Generations of walkers, team captains, volunteers, and advocates have built this movement. We have only been able to achieve all of our successes, including raising over $100 million throughout the years, because of participants like you.
Now, in our 40th year, we are preparing to honor that legacy and want you to join us along the way.
We remember the early years, when fear and stigma were everywhere but our community showed up anyway. We celebrate the progress made through activism, research, and compassion. And we recommit ourselves to the work ahead because, as we know, the fight to end HIV is not over.

Supreme Court Guts Voting Rights Act in 6-3 Decision: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court significantly narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a key provision that broadly outlawed discrimination in voting on the basis of race for decades. The case involved a challenge to two majority-Black districts in Louisiana. The majority found that evidence of racial disparity in the drawing of earlier maps was too weak to justify the use of race to draw the new map. The decision creates further uncertainty to redistricting following the Court’s 2019 holding that partisan gerrymandering is not prohibited by the constitution.

House Committee Hears Anti-Trans Education Bill: Earlier this week, the House Rules Committee discussed House Bill 2616 (the Parental Rights Over the Education and Care of Their [PROTECT] Kids Act), which would require any public elementary and middle schools that receive federal funding to require parental consent to change a child’s gender expression in school. This includes getting approval before allowing children to use their preferred locker room or bathroom. LGBTQ+ rights advocates have criticized these efforts, as it raises issues of at-home safety — especially if the home is not LGBTQ+-affirming — and could lead to the outing of transgender students.

Trump HUD Department Proposes Rollback of Federal Gedner Identity Housing Protections: The Department of Housing and Urban Development is accepting public comments on a proposed rule that would remove references to “gender” and “gender identity” from agency regulations and replace them with “sex,” defined as a person’s biological classification as male or female. If finalized, the rule would repeal an Obama-era rule that ensured housing programs are open without regard to gender identity. The new rule also would allow owners or operators of shelters and other facilities that permit single-sex or sex-specific facilities “...to require reasonable assurances and evidence to confirm the sex of an individual seeking service.” National Housing Law Center Chief Program Officer Deborah Thrope said the proposal would "[force] more housing insecure people to live on the street rather than in shelter.”

Group of Transgender Federal Prisoners Will Have Safety Concerns Re-Adjudicated in District Court: A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit vacated a preliminary injunction issued by a lower court which had blocked the transfer of eighteen transgender women to men’s federal prisons. Each of the plaintiffs had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, received long-term hormone therapy, and some had undergone gender-affirming surgeries. The plaintiffs alleged that transferring them to men’s prisons would expose them to grave risks of violence, abuse, and psychological harm. The Appellate panel held that the district court’s original decision was too broad and remanded the case back to the district court.

RFK, Jr. Claims 'Press 3' Crisis Line Option Will Be Reinstated: HHS Secretary Kennedy confirmed in a Senate hearing that specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth at the 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline will be restored after it was abruptly cut last summer. A recent study has found that after the launch of the hotline in 2022, suicide deaths among teens and young adults were about 11% lower than expected, amounting to roughly 4,400 fewer deaths through 2024. It remains to be seen whether RFK, Jr. — who has advanced numerous anti-LGBTQ+ policies — will follow though on that commitment.

SCOTUS Declines to Hear Case Regarding Schools, Civil Rights. The Supreme Court has declined to decide if a Florida school district violated the civil rights of a transgender student’s parents by developing a gender transition plan for the child without their knowledge. The parent-plaintiffs allowed their child to use a “new nickname” at school but told the child’s teacher they did not support the use of new pronouns. An 11th Circuit panel ruled 2-1 against the parents last March after finding that the district’s actions did not “shock the conscience.” The majority reasoned that the child was not physically harmed or forced to participate in the transition plan.

Anti-Trans Zealot Nominated by Trump as United States Surgeon General. Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would be nominating Nicole Saphier, a longtime Fox News contributor, to serve as the next surgeon general of the United States. Saphier has been an ardent anti-transgender voice, hosting detransitioners on her podcast, calling being transgender a "fad" and a "trend" among youth, equating gender-affirming care with "promoting body dysmorphic disorder," and declaring that transgender youth constitute a mental health "national emergency.”

Federal Challenge Filed Against Anti-Transgender Idaho Bathroom Ban. Lambda Legal, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights legal organization, and other legal groups filed suit in federal court Thursday on behalf of six transgender Idahoans in a challenge to the recently-passed HB 752. The bill, signed by Governor Brad Little earlier this year, is one of the most severe anti-transgender bathroom bans in the country; a first offense is a misdemeanor with up to a one-year prison sentence, while a second offense is a felony with up to five years in prison. The bill applies to all government buildings and businesses open to the public; Lambda’s Kell Olson and F. Curt Kirschner, Jr. say the law is “...intended to erase the very existence of Idaho’s transgender community.”

California Senator Holds Hearing on Health Challenges for LGBTQ+ Seniors. In a State Senate hearing titled Supporting the Generation That Built the Movement, advocates and LGBTQ+ seniors examined how California’s systems are falling short in supporting those aging with HIV and transgender seniors. Senator John Laird, who convened the hearing, emphasized it would inform ongoing budget and policy discussions with a focus on improving coordination across systems and ensuring programs are reaching those most in need.

Good afternoon Solano Pride Center team,
My name is Emerson Shiang and I am the research coordinator at UCSF’s Division of Prevention Science (Department of Medicine) for an older gay men’s study called Openly Gray, and an older trans women’s study called Matriarch. Earlier this year our study was cancelled by the federal government, and while our study has been reinstated, we are still at risk for being terming due to our population. Therefore, we are in a great rush to gather as many participants as we can and have expanded our reach from outside the 9 counties of the Bay Area to Santa Cruz, Fresno, and Sacramento.

Openly Gray is a NIH funded study that explores what contributes to health and wellbeing of aging gay men. Participants will go through an interview that includes a blood collection via finger prick, an online questionnaire, and a chance to refer friends to the study. They will receive a stipend of $100 for their participation and then for each friend they refer to the study they will receive an additional $25. We are looking to recruit gay, cis-men, ages 50 and over who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Fresno, and Sacramento, and identify as Black/African American, Latino, or Asian & Pacific Islander. We have already reached our goal for White participants; so currently, we are not accepting White participants and are looking for individuals that identify as Black/African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Latino/Hispanic. The study can be done remotely over Zoom or in person at UCSF Mission Bay. Participation can be English or Spanish.
Matriarch is a supplemental grant we received off Openly Gray that will be looking at the same things but for older trans women. International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (May 17th): (IDAHO or IDAHOT) are widely recognized as an essential feature in the international LGBT rights calendar. In the 9th edition, in 2013, commemorations took place in almost 120 countries, in all world regions. The day aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide. IDAHO’s date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990. The original founders of the International Day Against Homophobia (or “IDAHO”), established the IDAHO Committee to co-ordinate grass-roots actions in different countries, to promote the day and to lobby for official recognition of May 17.

May 19: National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: Observed annually on May 19, National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NAPIHAAD) highlights the impact of HIV on Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, focusing on reducing stigma, promoting testing, and providing culturally responsive care. Founded in 2005, it falls during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

- Significance: The day focuses on breaking the silence surrounding HIV/AIDS, encouraging testing, and addressing stigma in API communities.

May 24: Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness and Visibility Day: May 24th is the annual Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness and Visibility Day, dedicated to celebrating individuals attracted to people regardless of gender and educating on these distinct identities. It highlights those who experience sexual (pansexual) or romantic (panromantic) attraction based on personality rather than gender identity.
