Eleven years ago tomorrow, I lost my husband Dave. In the Jewish tradition we say, “may his memory be a blessing.” In that spirit, today @iamrobgoldberg, @tom_bernthal, and I are announcing the new Dave Goldberg Scholarship at @ramahcalifornia.

Camp Ramah is where Dave built friendships that lasted decades. It’s where he developed a sense of independence that shaped the rest of his life. It’s where his Jewish identity took root and grew into something he held onto always. If you ever got Dave talking about camp — the late nights, the inside jokes, the competitions he swore he won — the kid in him came right back. And all of this was made possible by the scholarship he received each year from his synagogue that allowed him to attend.

While I never got to see Dave at camp, I spent years seeing its impact in the man he became, in the father our children had, and in the way he moved through the world with so much generosity.

At Camp Ramah, Dave developed an understanding of Jewish Theology. He didn’t just memorize prayers; he learned to study, question, and wrestle with ideas that were thousands of years old. Dave passed that spirit of positive questioning on to our children when they were young. After he died, Camp Ramah carried it forward.

When our kids would come home from their summers at Camp Ramah, they’d tell me stories that sounded just like Dave’s. The friendships they made. The Shabbats under the trees. The games and the songs and the prayers. In those moments, Dave felt closer than ever.

More children deserve a summer like that. A place that makes them more themselves and stays with them long after they leave. The scholarship will make it possible for 30 children with the greatest financial need to experience Camp Ramah in California each summer for many decades to come.

Dave, we miss you every single day. This scholarship is for the piece of your heart that you always left at camp.
