FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(Washington, D.C., February 15, 2019)
Kennedy Center musicians Adria Sternstein Fosterand Susan Robinson are delighted to announce the release of IRIDESCENCE, their new recording of contemporary works for flute and harp.
As the principal flutist and principal harpist of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Adria and Susan have been colleagues since the mid-1990s performing for the Washington National Opera as well as Kennedy Center ballet and musical theater programming. In Susan's first and Adria's second season in the orchestra they partnered in a performance of Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp and perform together regularly, in the IBIS Chamber Music Society and elsewhere.
IRIDESCENCE suggests the colorful and glowing sound quality of the unique combination of flute and harp. It is a fitting title for a collection of music full of kaleidoscopic harmonies and vivid imagery that references water, sun, and the natural world around us.
The Composers
Gareth Farr
Stella Sung
Vincent Persichetti
William Alwyn
Jacques Bondon
Selections on the recording include works by two living composers. New Zealand composer
Gareth Farr has achieved international recognition and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to music and entertainment. His work
Taheke pays homage to the glorious landscape of New Zealand by imaginatively depicting three waterfalls of his native land: the Huka Falls, Whangarei Falls and a private waterfall in the Marlborough Sounds known only to his family.
Award-winning American composer Stella Sung combines the distinct qualities of the flute and harp to create a magical composition entitled Dance of the White Lotus Under the Silver Moon. As described by the composer: "Japanese and Chinese screens that often portray scenes of nature inspired this work, written in 1998.Thus in this manner, I have imagined a kind of dialog between the flautist (the "silver moon") and harpist ("lotus flowers") as they dance and sway under the enchantment of the evening moonlight. I am grateful to Adria and Susan for a wonderful performance and recording of one of my pieces that I consider to be amongst my best."
This recording also showcases the Serenade No. 10 by 20th century American composer Vincent Persichetti and Naiades: Fantasy Sonata by the 20th century British composer William Alwyn. In this work ancient nymphs of Greek mythology are conjured in a piece both sublimely poetic and technically brilliant.
