Annual Fund Appeal and School Update

Dear Families and Friends of HCA,
Every fall we kick off our 1st big fundraiser of the school year, the Annual Fund, by sending out a letter highlighting all that is going on at our school. In light of the October 21 flooding that affected our entire 1st floor, this letter is more of an update. We have just begun the process of “recombobulation”, which is proving to be very challenging. Our staff and students have been extremely patient and flexible! As we celebrate the season of Thanksgiving we have much to be thankful for and here is just a partial list:
- No one was hurt in the flood
- We didn’t have to miss any school
- Holden Chapel has been marvelous about letting HCA use their space for five classrooms, the school office, and a host of special activities
- Grades K-2 were able to return to their space the following week, due to quick actions taken by our custodian during the night of the flooding and the fact that we had recently replaced all the carpet with tiles
- Our restoration contractor, ServiceMaster, along with many volunteers, did a professional and thorough job
- The Greek Olympics were a huge success (see photos below)
- The new entrance, though delayed, is almost done and will be a big improvement
- We have banded together, have remained positive and hopeful, and are trusting God!!!
Now I need to mention the challenges we are facing related to this incident:
- The office lost a computer, files, and paper
- The 3rd grade lost a large portion of the teacher’s personal library and bookcases
- The 4th grade room lost a room divider, books, pillows, and materials
- Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade lost books, posters, and teaching materials
- The newly renovated library lost dozens of early readers, a whole shelf of references, two new hassocks, and a computer
- The theater closet lost a great deal of props, framed art, microphones, and many teaching books
- The costs to the church and the school for the restoration and replacement of damaged items, while not determined exactly at this time, will be extensive
Some of our future plans include:
- Replacing the carpets on the lower level with vinyl tile
- Upgrading our wireless capabilities so we are able to make better use of our iPads and technology
- Upgrading our security with additional cameras and entrance door
