Prayers for the sick - A good spiritual practice

Every week at Mass one of the petitions is praying for the sick. We pray, by name for those who are recently ill or have had a condition worsen and have asked for our prayers. We also then pray for all those who are ill on our parish sick list. If you peruse the bulletin (after Mass is concluded of course!), then you will notice our sick list is quite full, containing 113 people, in addition to others who do not wish their name published. Some of the people are newly added and could be included for an acute issue while others may be dealing with long-term chronic, or even fatal, illnesses. We can and should pray for all of these individuals. Our prayers strengthen and support them, and can bring about the grace to face all the myriad of challenges illnesses bring. Sometimes those on the list are healed after God hears our prayers, and we give Him glory and thanks! When that occurs, the parish is not always informed. If you know of somebody on our parish sick list that you know has been healed, please let us know so we can truly give thanks!

Over the next several weeks a number of pastoral ministers will be reaching out to those on the sick list to offer continued prayers and support. Visiting the sick is, after all, one of the seven Corporal works of Mercy. We hope to journey with those suffering, knowing that the Church is here to provide comfort, aid, and support. While there may be many other sick individuals not included on the official prayer list, please know I am always available to visit the sick. Be it at the hospital, in a nursing home, or even a home visit. I am available to pray with the individuals and their families and offer the sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Confession if they so desire.

       Vestibule improvements

There have been a lot of positive comments about some recent enhancements to the vestibules. A vestibule is the gathering space to help us transition from the outside world as we enter the sacred space of the body of the church, as we have at all of our three entrances. The main vestibule had three new rugs and much needed improved lighting with five chandeliers added. This past week all three vestibules had new cabinets, countertops, and drawers installed. They look terrific and it is our hope this will help keep these areas neat and tidy as we welcome thousands to our Church weekly for prayers and devotions. I want to especially thank the generous support of the Women's Guild of St. Mary for allowing these improvements to be made.

Did you know that every Pope adds something to St. Peter's Basilica? Each Holy Father adds something to the Church to show that we are a living breathing Church that is never quite completed on this side of eternity. There are always ways in which we can build up the kingdom of God here on earth, and we continue to seek ways to best serve the needs of every generation that passes through the doors of the Church, School, Parish Center, and Rectory of St. Mary.

       Have a blessed week!
