Winter comes and goes with flurries of snow, ice, and cold water each year– three things nobody should ever take lightly. Whether you plan to be near the water or not, cold water can be dangerous, especially if you are unprepared.

Winter activities like ice skating, ice-fishing, and boating are fun, but to keep them enjoyable, your safety should always be your number one priority. Knowing what can happen if you fall into cold water and what to do in those first few seconds could save you or your loved one’s life.

National Burn Awareness Week February 1-7, 2026

While outside is filled with snow and ice, the warmer days of summer will return. As part of our water safety work, Safe Kids Grand Forks has applied for and received grants from the Sea Tow Foundation to set up life jacket loaner programs around our region. These include a life jacket loaner board down by the water and near a public boating ramp. You can check out our website for locations of these we have started.

The application is open for the 2026 life jacket loaner boards and we are willing to help with writing the grant application. Here is what we are asking for. . . . . do you know of a location in northeast ND or northwest MN that could benefit from a loaner board? If so, please reach out to us at safekids@altru.org. If you have the contact person for the location, that would be a big bonus.

The applications are due by 2.15 so please get us your ideas soon so we can start working on the logistics.
