Dear Principals and Administrators,
We often receive requests for a list of required trainings for school staff and resources to provide the trainings. Please see below for a summary of NYS mandatory school staff trainings and NYC FDNY required trainings. This list is not exhaustive - there may be other trainings required for specific roles.
Please note: This list reflects NYS and FDNY required trainings. Agudath Israel does not take responsibility for the content of any trainings besides the ones that we provide.
Mandatory Trainings for Nonpublic School Staff Statewide
I. Child Abuse Identification and Reporting (Mandated Reporter Training):

Purpose: Train staff to identify and report signs of child abuse and maltreatment. Ensure all staff understand their legal obligation to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

Requirement: All staff must complete this training at least once.
- Details:
- Covers recognizing abuse, understanding state reporting obligations, and the legal process.
- Provided by NYSED-approved programs or licensed trainers.
- Includes recognizing signs of neglect, protocols for reporting, and addressing implicit bias.
- The requirements were recently uodated. The updated curriculum must be completed by April 1, 2025.

Frequency: One-time requirement unless otherwise updated by state law.

II. Identification of Child Abuse in an Educational Setting:

Purpose: Train staff to address abuse occurring within the school environment.

Requirement: Mandatory annual training for all personnel in educational settings.
III. Annual Harassment Prevention Training:

Purpose: Educate staff on preventing and addressing workplace sexual harassment.

Requirement: Mandated by New York State law for all employees.

Details:
- Covers harassment definitions, complaint procedures, and bystander intervention.
- May be provided by schools directly or through third-party trainers.

Mandatory Trainings for Nonpublic School Staff in NYC
I. Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor for NYC K-12 Nonpublic Schools

Purpose: Designate individuals to conduct fire drills and manage emergency evacuations.

Requirement: Required for personnel conducting drills in nonpublic schools. At least one person in the building must have a Fire and Emergency Preparedness Certification.

Details: Either a Certificate of Fitness F-07 OR Certificate of Fitness D-20 fulfills the requirement.

F-07 Process:
- Prepare for the FDNY-administered written exam.

D-20 - Agudah provides an annual D-20 training, usually in the late spring/early summer. See here for more information. Please respond to this email if you are interested in the training.
II. Certificate of Fitness S-95 (Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems and Other Related Systems):

Purpose: Supervise fire alarm systems in school facilities.

Requirement: Required for personnel overseeing alarm systems.

S-95 Process:
- Prepare for the FDNY-administered written exam.

Renewal: Certificates of Fitness must be renewed every three years. Please see HERE page 5 and 6 for instructions on viewing your certificates and rnewing.
