Metropolitan Chicago Jewish Population Study
Every ten years, JUF conducts a study to learn about the size, characteristics, attitudes and needs of our Jewish community. NORC at the University of Chicago, in partnership with Brandeis University, is conducting the study. You may be contacted one of three ways:
- by mail (from NORC at the University of Chicago)
-
by email ([email protected]). Please check spam folders for invitations you might have missed
- by phone (the caller ID will say “NORC U CHICAGO”).
Because this is a scientific survey, only a sample of the community will be invited to participate; therefore, if you are contacted, your participation is very important. If you have questions about the study, please contact David Rubovits at the Jewish United Fund ([email protected]).

The Forgotten Jewish Refugees: Three Personal Stories with AJC
|
|
Monday, November 30, 2020
11:00 AM
On November 30, Jews around the world will remember the fate of more than 850,000 Jews who were driven out of Arab countries and Iran, beginning in the 1940s. The vast majority of Jews from Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Syria, and Yemen faced persecution and violence, and left the countries where they had lived for centuries. They emigrated to Israel, as well as North and South America and Europe, where they’ve sought to preserve their rich heritage and unique history. Join AJC for three first-hand accounts of this tragic, inspiring, and little-known chapter of modern Jewish history.

The experience of grieving always seems like visiting a foreign place, feeling disoriented and isolated without the person we loved. COVID-19 has increased our isolation as it keeps us from grieving in community. JCFS will come together virtually (via Zoom) to explore alternative ways to mourn and grieve while we gain comfort in being together.
Presenters include: Cantor David Berger of KAM Isaiah Israel, Laurie Garber-Amram of JCFS Chicago, Tracey Lipsig Kite of JCFS Chicago and Dr. Nancy Wagner, Superintendent of River Trails School District 26 (Mt. Prospect) and a member of Congregation B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim in Deerfield. Through music, mindfulness, poems, and pictures they will honor the loved ones who have died and our own grief. You are invited to share a photo of your loved one(s) during the event.

|
Sunday, December 6, 2020

Memory, madness, faith, friendship, language — these were the lifelong preoccupations of survivor, witness, and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. But Wiesel was also a teacher and writer who left us a treasure trove of tales and moral teachings that we can apply to today’s world.
Join Rabbi Ariel Burger, a devoted protégé of Wiesel and author of the award-winning book, Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom, as he shares insights into some of today’s most complex issues.
