Water/Wastewater & Building Inspection Data Collection

The UNC School of Government's NC Benchmarking Project is collaborating with the EFC and the NC OSFM to kick off a state-wide water/wastewater and building plan review, permit, and inspections data collection. The purpose of this project is to provide our water/wastewater and building jurisdictions with data to:

  • Develop solutions and best practices for dealing with persistent problems
  • Improve performance through the evidence-informed decision-making process
  • Celebrate and communicate success to stakeholders
  • Gain a better understanding of their own organizational performance
  • Engage in peer-to-peer learning and networking

The deadline to submit data is Wednesday, September 18th. Data entry instructions are available here. All data collected through this process will be made publicly available for analysis on the NC Benchmarking Dashboard and GIS mapping (under construction). Raw data will also be shared with all jurisdictions who participate in this process.

Reforming the HCV Program Through Direct Rental Assistance

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program helps 2.3 million low-income households affordably rent housing in the private market each year, enabling them to live in less crowded conditions and reducing their chances of experiencing homelessness. However, a significant share of households assigned a voucher are unable to use it, in part because the HCV program’s complexity discourages many landlords from participating.

One proposed reform involves direct rental assistance payments to eligible households instead of routing subsidies through local public housing authorities to landlords. This initiative aims to streamline the HCV program and encourage greater landlord participation.

During this webinar, BPC will host a discussion with local and national experts to explore the opportunities and challenges of direct rental assistance. We will also delve into insights from a pilot program in Philadelphia and discuss potential broader impacts of implementing direct rental assistance to HCV families.
