Our members are the life blood of our organization! We are happy to report that our membership meeting on October 15th was quite a success. We had several new members join and many current memberships renewed. We hosted about 50 people for food and fellowship, followed by a presentation on our water quality project, and ending with a general meeting with election of officers.

Our elected GRWA board of directors are: President - Jenna Breeckner, Vice-President - Thomas Haley, Secretary - Willow Kelly, Treasurer - Elizabeth Clark. We thank the WVSOM, Dr. Matthew Williams, lab assistant Julie Stadtfeld and all of our volunteers who go out once a month to gather data and get samples. New Board Member - The Greenbrier River Watershed Association is pleased to have Kurt Johnson join us as our newest board member. He has been helping team 5 at the lower end of the watershed with monthly water quality testing. Kurt recently relocated to Monroe County from northern Virginia after retiring from a 26-year career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as a wildlife biologist and climate change specialist. While with USFWS, Kurt spent 16 years working on climate adaptation of fish and wildlife and their habitats. Prior to that he worked as an endangered species biologist and as an international wildlife trade specialist. Kurt has a strong interest in landscape-scale conservation, especially for freshwater systems and karst areas. He has worked with land trusts and landowners to help preserve private lands through conservation easements, and does some volunteering internationally, working with local NGOs and community organizations to build capacity and address threats to conservation from climate change and other factors. He enjoys caving, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and natural history walks. Kurt has degrees from Utah State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is married and has one daughter.

On October 16th, a dedicated team of 8 volunteers recently finished up a memorial to Leslee McCarty at the Public Access Stream Park in Caldwell. Many thanks to Chris Chanlett, Nancy Harris, Lorrie Sprague, Tom Cullen, Harry Ernst, John Walkup, Evan Adamson, & Hannah Rivoire as well as RBS for gravel and supplies. Keep an eye out for a summer meeting/ picnic at this location to be scheduled this coming summer.

We are also working to improve habitat connectivity for wildlife throughout Virginia and to ensure that all of our waterways are fully protected in accordance with the law.

Stop the Money Pipeline ~ If we can stop the flow of money, we can stop the flow of oil. In early 2020, thirty-two organizations came together to form the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition. We stand on the shoulders of years of movement work pressuring financial institutions to act on climate.
