Eagle Scouts marked 25 storm drains

Eagle Scouts eagerly marked 25 storm drains in Arlington in May. Storm drain markers alert community members to remember its "only rain down the drain."

Girl Scouts cleaned up Shirlington Park on May 7. Maxwell Julius, high school volunteer, taught Brownies about birds, pollution, habitats, and how to identify poison ivy. Together they picked up trash from a local stream area.

Giuliana de la Incera, EcoAction Arlington intern, presented her capstone project at Arlington Tech on May 26. Giuliana has worked on our events, administrative tasks, and this newsletter. Congratulations to Giuliana on her high school graduation and all the best to her going forward. Giuliana will be studying environmental policy at Mount Holyoke College starting in the Fall. Tree Equity Canopy Program Update

On April 29, American Conservation Coalition volunteers, organized by Michael Coletti, canvassed the Buckingham neighborhood to spread the word about the Tree Canopy Program.

On May 25th, Amazon volunteers visited the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Residents were incredibly welcoming, and many people even came on their bikes or in their cars to greet us and inquire about the trees. The support and engagement from the community was incredible! We had so much fun connecting with the people and making a positive impact in their neighborhood.

Coming Fall 2023!

Spring is coming to a close and summer is fast approaching; we can hear the waves calling and smell the funnel cakes at the Arlington County Fair. We wish you much fun in the sun, as well as respite under the shade of a tree this summer, as we look forward to two events this Fall.

  1. The Annual International Coastal Cleanup with EcoAction Arlington
  2. Native Seed Collection to help restore native forests

Both events are great for families. Dates and registration information to come soon.

The Fifth Annual EcoExtravaganza

EcoAction Arlington’s Fifth Annual EcoExtravaganza was a spectacular evening at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, where we celebrated forty-five years of environmental work and renewed our ongoing commitment to engage, advocate, and act to create a sustainable environment.

EcoAction Arlington Board Chair Jenn Yates kicked off our program by inviting Virginia Delegate Alfonso Lopez, EcoAction Arlington Executive Director Elenor Hodges, and Senior Manager of Community Engagement for our presenting sponsor Amazon, Patrick Phillippi, to offer welcome remarks. Our featured presentations from the Head of Service Design, Strategic Initiatives for The Rounds, Evan Abel, and the Mid-Atlantic Program Officer for The Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund, Kendyl Crawley Crawford, enlightened us with innovative strategies that advance sustainability and thought-provoking perspectives on our responsibility to work collectively to build a better, healthier world. Nothing demonstrated the meaning of those words more than Mike Hemminger from the NAACP, who closed the program with a generous donation of $60,000 to support our Tree Canopy Equity Program.

Community Spotlight: Buckingham

Buckingham is located in central Arlington, between Glebe Road and Arlington Boulevard. It has a suburban feel while being close to nearby shops and restaurants in the Ballston corridor. It is bikable and walkable with easy access to public transportation. A 354-square foot mural decorates the wall of Glebe Market, at the corner of North Pershing Drive and North Glebe Road, as a testament to the neighborhood’s cultural diversity. Inaugurated in 2002, the mural was designed and painted by the Buckingham Youth Brigade. A recent study* found that Buckingham has a 21% tree canopy coverage. EcoAction Arlington and dedicated volunteers have been canvassing the neighborhood to help get more trees planted.
