EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every Friday morning, following the 8:00am Mass, we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, continuing until 9:30am, with the Office of Morning Prayer at 9:00am. All are invited to join in this time of prayer in the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
ALL SAINTS Masses for the Holy Day will be on Monday, October 31 at 5:30pm, and Tuesday, November 1 at 8:00am, 10:15am (with O’Dea High School), and 12:10pm.
THE COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED–ALL SOULS Masses for All Souls will be on Wednesday, November 2 at 8:00am and 12:10pm. The solemn liturgy with Duruflé’s Requiem will be at 7:00pm with Father Ryan presiding. You are invited to record the names of your own beloved dead in the Book of the Dead near the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This book will be carried in the procession at the Solemn Mass of All Souls.

CELEBRATION OF ALL OUR SAINTS Saturday, November 5 at 11:00am. You are invited to join representatives of many of the cultural and ethnic communities that make up the Archdiocese of Seattle in this festive celebration of the great “cloud of witnesses,” the saints of every nation who inspire us and show us how to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. JOB OPENING: FAITH FORMATION SUPPORT The parish has an opening for an Administrative Assistant in the Faith Formation Department. This position will support and provide clerical and administrative assistance for the Faith Formation Staff for all Faith Formation ministries, including RCIA for both children and adults, providing clerical and administrative assistance as needed for programs like Welcome Back, Adult Confirmation, Baptisms, Bible Studies, and special events. ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A middle aged man relocated from the east coast to Seattle a few years ago. Initially the man settled into Seattle comfortably with a full-time job, however, when the pandemic started the man was laid off. After his unemployment ended, the man used his savings and charged some expenses on a bank card. Eventually his savings and credit line were exhausted and he fell behind in paying his rent. The man called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline requesting assistance (206-767-6449). With your support, we were able to help him with the current month’s rent. FATHER AUGUSTUS TOLTON: FROM SLAVE TO PRIEST Saturday, November 19 at 7:00pm at Pigott Auditorium on the Seattle University Campus. This engrossing one-man multi-media performance tells the story of Father Augustus Tolton, the first African American priest in the United States, who is now being considered for sainthood by the Vatican. From his dramatic escape from slavery to his courageous struggle in the face of prejudice, Fr. Tolton’s inspiring life centers around the message of reconciliation, hope and demonstrates Jesus’ all-encompassing love. The performance runs 75 minutes and is suitable for ages 10 and up. The performance is sponsored by our neighbors at Immaculate Conception Church. Free-will offering.
CONFIRMATION FOR YOUTH The Archdiocese of Seattle has reduced the age for the sacrament of Confirmation to age 13. If your child will be 13 years of age by the end of April 2023, now is the time to enroll them in Confirmation sessions for preparation. Sessions began on September 18. VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM The Cathedral’s Columbarium was blessed by Archbishop Etienne last December. A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open. Niches are available to parishioners who have been registered at least two years. OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH PREPARES (Pregnancy and Parenting Support) is a nurturing response of the Catholic community in Washington State to “walk the journey” with pregnant and parenting women, men, and families with children up to age 5 who find themselves lacking a healthy support network. The program, an initiative of our state’s bishops, came into being five years ago. PREPARES is active in helping provide basic needs to parents and their children, organizing parent support groups, providing opportunities for parents and children to get together, and family companions to share relationships with a parent in the community. AN UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER In September St. James Immigrant Assistance learned of an Afghan family who recently arrived and needed everything to furnish their apartment. Within five days, the St. James Refugee Support Team had delivered beds, furniture, kitchenware, cleaning supplies, children’s toys, clothing and more; all through the support of local organizations and neighbors. While sharing tea with the family the day of the delivery, one volunteer and the father of the family realized that they had met in Afghanistan years earlier when the volunteer was serving in the military. The volunteer shared how joyful he felt by this unexpected reconnection.
YOUTH ALTAR SERVERS Children who have received their First Holy Communion are eligible to participate in the Mass in a special way as altar servers. Altar servers add dignity to the liturgy and assist the priest during Mass. Altar serving is a great way for kids to get to know the Mass better, and participate actively in their faith along with other young people. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION The Cathedral needs more communion ministers! The need is particularly great on Saturday and Sunday evenings and Sunday morning at 8:00am, but there are openings at all Masses. In order to bring back communion under both kinds (both the host and the chalice), the fullest form of Eucharistic participation, we need many new ministers! Confirmed, practicing Catholics of all ages are welcome to participate in this important ministry. Training is provided. TEEN, YOUNG ADULT AND ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FAITH FRIENDS MINISTRY Faith Friends is a unique blend of our Faith Mentor, children’s faith formation program, and an inclusion ministry. The ministry's goal is to give children and teens ages 7- 18 with physical, cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities access to the parish community, social events, and faith formation. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Faith Friends program is the Faith Peer program. Faith Peers are teens and young adults who have chosen to live out their discipleship and share some of their personal time in dedication and service to the goals of the program.
