Celebrating life-changing science at our annual gala

One-two punch drug combination offers hope for pancreatic cancer patients
Ze'ev Ronai, Ph.D., identified a combination of two anti-cancer compounds that shrank pancreatic tumors in mice. Published in
Nature Cell Biology,
the discovery
supports the immediate evaluation of the FDA-approved drugs in a pancreatic cancer clinical trial. The drugs are currently used to treat certain leukemias and solid tumors.

Machine learning method accelerates epigenetic drug discovery
Alexey Terskikh, Ph.D., developed a machine-learning algorithm that gleans insights from microscope images—allowing for high-throughput epigenetic drug screens that may unlock new treatments for cancer, heart disease, mental illness and more. The study was published in
eLife.

Sanford Burnham Prebys teams up with cancer-fighting community at Padres Pedal the Cause
Our team of more than 50 scientists, staff and supporters ran, walked, biked and volunteered to raise money for local cancer research at the 2019 Padres Pedal the Cause fundraising event. The team joined thousands of fellow cancer fighters, including former Padre Tony Gwynn Jr. and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who shared one vision: a world without cancer.

Experts discuss outsmarting the "world's toughest cancer"
Only 9% of people with pancreatic cancer survive longer than five years. To help the public better understand why pancreatic cancer is so lethal—and learn about the latest efforts to develop new medicines—the Institute partnered with the Fleet Science Center to host a panel discussion featuring a survivor, a scientist and a clinician.
