Hello my dear ones!
"Just 1 Tip" from my last newsletter really resonated with many of you as I got lots of requests for the Boiled Water/Usnodaka recipe. So simple, easy and costs next to nothing. One small change, a one degree of shift, over the course of your lifetime can yield great health benefits. Living in a healthier way and in concert with our external world really doesn't have to be costly.
Today's newsletter tip is even simpler...just 3 words for a healthier Winter and then I'll explain.
Warm, Moist & Cooked.
As you learned last time, you are approximately a 98.6 degree entity and warmed water is closer to your normal state. So, it stands to reason that Warm, Moist and Cooked foods will be better for your digestive system overall. My friends it has been really cold out and as one of my favorite NYTimes writers recently wrote- "It's potato degrees outside!"- meaning let's eat some warm, cooked comfort foods made with potatoes to help our internal environment heat up from the inside. Cold foods that are usually dry, rough and raw just make the body even more so, leading to more dry, rough skin and dried out colons (read: constipation) during the winter months. (Treat your dry skin with an Abhyanga Oil Massage: Rescheduled due to weather, New Date: Friday, Feb. 9, 7pm...more details below).
What are Cold, Dry, Raw foods...here it comes, prepare yourselves...SALADs are the biggest offender this time of year. I know for some it's "diet season" but this is the wrong time of year for these types of foods (please, wait for Spring when there is an abundance of fresh, bitter greens available).
Winter time then is the perfect time to not only add warmed water/teas in your diet but also nutritious, dense, warm, moist(oily) and cooked foods in your body to maximize the ability of the body to get the right amount of fluid and nutrients from it to prevent the dryness and dehydration that goes along with the season. So when considering what to eat this winter, just apply this simple rule: Warm, Moist and Cooked- to create more balance in the body as it tries to defeat the influences of the Winter season.
The Ayurvedic texts proclaim that warmed, moist and cooked foods won't put out your digestive fire (agni), which peaks in Winter, as these foods also act to balance the effects of our external wintry environment. If you want to STOKE your digestive fire this winter, how about drinking CCF Tea! Cumin, Coriander and Fennel seeds are known to help increase the amount of digestive enzymes in the stomach, fueling the fire to help you better break down foods in the gut!
Here's to better Winter digestion for all! Love, Ginger
