Husband and wife artists Melissa Mastrangelo and Horacio Lertora return to Gallery 14 with their pop art pieces made from multiple wood squares featuring iconic retro images and plenty of nostalgia. The opening reception for Pop Rocks: Mixed Media by Melissa Mastrangelo and Horacio Lertora is Friday March 7, 5-8 p.m. as part of First Friday Gallery Stroll.
Melissa and Horacio like to say that they are spouses sharing the same canvas in life and art. They started out as sign makers and now utilize Horacio's skill as a theater set designer and Melissa's fine art painting skills in their work. The couple often incorporates typography and hand cut stenciling into their art. According to Melissa, “We have always enjoyed combining patterns, retro imagery, ephemera, color, and text, and appreciate the playful way it all interacts together."

Museum of the Everglades
Through May 3
Best-selling South Florida author Randy Wayne White spent 13 years as a full-time fishing guide out of Tarpon Bay on nearby Sanibel Island. He had run over 3,000 paid charters ranging from Fort Myers to Flamingo when government regulations closed the bay he guided from to motorized craft. With a wife and two young sons to support and his livelihood in jeopardy, he set out to write the great American novel – and succeeded. It was 1989.
Combining his passion for Florida history with his knowledge of coastal waters, the local culture and experience with the people and places that make the region so unique, Mr. White created a protagonist for his story – Marion “Doc” Ford.
| |
A former national security agent turned marine biologist who was simultaneously relatable, likeable, and still deadly when necessary. 27 books later, the Doc Ford series is still going strong.
The action in Randy Wayne White’s books crisscrosses the state (and sometimes the globe) but the Everglades remain at the heart of many of his stories. Many readers recognize locations described in the novels and often see local personalities reflected in the books’ characters. New visitors to the area have already learned about the challenges facing what remains of “old Florida” through Mr. White’s writings when they arrive and immediately feel connections with both the people and the land.
Randy Wayne White’s Everglades celebrates and explores those connections and the author whose work brings the REAL Florida to life.

From MartinArts - Save the date!
Friday, March 28, 2025 | 6PM-9PM
The Pittenger Center at St. Mary's Episcopal Church
A tribute to George Gershwin’s 1924 musical composition, the Rhapsody in Blue Gala celebrates MartinArts’ 45th anniversary. Held in the Pittenger Center at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, it will feature performances from some of the area’s finest artists, gourmet cuisine from Chef's Table, and an online auction to fundraise for the Stuart High School arts campus.
MartinArts has been a driving force for artistic expression for over four decades, providing a supportive infrastructure for the creation and enjoyment of art. By hosting annual events, year-round exhibits and arts education programs, MartinArts reinforces a dynamic arts sector that allows our community to thrive economically, socially, and creatively.
| |
There are many reasons people are flocking to Florida, one of which is the lively towns and cities which have cultivated arts and culture as an important element of their community. Not only do the arts improve well-being and unify our communities, they also drive the area’s economic development with a significant impact of over $31M annually.
With the recent absence of arts funding from the State, MartinArts is faced with making up a future deficit in unrestricted support that we rely on. Unless we are successful in raising more funds from our community, this will force our hands to reduce and eliminate programs. As a community, we must be vigilant in protecting our vital arts community. The arts mean so much to so many aspects of the vibrant quality of life we, as Martin County residents, have come to expect, anticipate and enjoy.
